Life imprisonment for two in 2019 Nawadih double murder

A local court in Bokaro on Monday sentenced two individuals to life imprisonment for their involvement in the 2019 Nawadih double murder case. The convicts, Govind Mahato (33) and Baijnath Mahato (59), both residents of Parsabani Tola Panbad under Nawadih police station limits, were found guilty by Additional District and Sessions Judge-I Deepak Kumar Baranwal.

Incident Details

According to additional public prosecutor Sarvesh Anand Singh, the incident occurred on May 22, 2019, when Mahendra Mahato was attacked by the accused, who are his neighbours. The attack took place on a road after an altercation over a mango tree. The assailants used sticks, bricks, and stones to assault Mahendra.

Hearing the commotion, Mahendra's relative Bablu and his mother Sukri Devi rushed to help, but they too sustained injuries in the attack. The three victims were admitted to Bokaro General Hospital for treatment. Sukri Devi was later referred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) in Ranchi, where she succumbed to her injuries on June 2, 2019. Mahendra died during treatment on May 25, 2019.

Court Verdict

In addition to life imprisonment, the court imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on each convict. If the fine is not paid, the convicts will face an additional one-year imprisonment. The judgment brings closure to a case that had shaken the local community.
