Madurai East Constituency: A High-Stakes Electoral Battle in Tamil Nadu
The Madurai East constituency in Tamil Nadu is emerging as a pivotal electoral contest, with Commercial Taxes and Registration Minister P Moorthy of the DMK aiming for a fourth consecutive term. He faces a challenge from AIADMK's fresh candidate, Mangulam K Mahendran, setting the stage for a closely watched political showdown.
Moorthy's Campaign Strategy and Welfare Promises
Minister P Moorthy, who secured victories in the 2016 and 2021 elections, has launched an intensive campaign, symbolically starting from Mangulam—the native village of his rival—on April 1. Over the past week, he has traversed multiple areas within the constituency, emphasizing the DMK government's welfare initiatives. Key promises highlighted include extending the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme to Class VIII students, doubling the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai financial assistance to ₹2,000, and introducing the 'Illatharasi' scheme, which offers ₹8,000 coupons to homemakers.
Despite visible support for the ruling DMK, residents report unresolved local issues. Shivakumar, a resident of Anaiyur, noted that while complaints like sewage overflow and damaged roads were addressed promptly, many villages still lack basic infrastructure. AIADMK functionaries acknowledge Moorthy's strong grassroots presence. Selvendiran, a party functionary, commented, "He has excelled in field work, which helped him win the past two elections. However, many promises remain unfulfilled." He also pointed to neglect in agricultural infrastructure, particularly the failure to widen irrigation canals despite repeated demands.
AIADMK's Approach and Mahendran's Credentials
The AIADMK's campaign, led by Mangulam K Mahendran, centers on accessibility and direct voter engagement. Selvendiran explained, "Mahendran is focused on being easily and directly accessible to the people of the constituency. This is what the people are looking for—a quick and sure way of having their problems heard and addressed." Advocate M P Parthiban, an AIADMK functionary and Mahendran's son, added that the party has been actively engaging with voters across the constituency. "People are raising issues that have not been addressed over the past ten years. There is a clear expectation for change," he said.
Parthiban recalled the constituency's historical alignment with the AIADMK and highlighted schemes implemented under former Chief Ministers J Jayalalithaa and Edappadi K Palaniswami, such as the 7.5% internal reservation for government school students in medical admissions. Defending Mahendran's candidacy, Parthiban stated, "Mahendran may be a new face in the fray, but he has been with the party for 45 years. As a lawyer with a clean image and experience in government posts, he represents a credible alternative."
The contest in Madurai East reflects broader political dynamics in Tamil Nadu, with both parties leveraging local issues, welfare promises, and candidate credibility to sway voters.
