Mamata Kicks Off 2026 Campaign in Bhowanipore Over Voter List Issues

Mamata Banerjee Initiates 2026 Assembly Election Campaign in Bhowanipore Amid Voter Roll Controversy

In a strategic move, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has commenced her campaign for the 2026 assembly elections, opting for a party workers' meeting in Bhowanipore rather than a large public rally. This decision comes against the backdrop of significant deletions from the Summary Revision of the Electoral Roll (SIR), which has raised concerns about voter disenfranchisement.

Focus on Bhowanipore with Intensive Ground Campaign

The meeting, scheduled for Sunday evening at Chetla's Ahindra Manch, will bring together Trinamool Congress (TMC) booth-level agents who were involved in the recent voter roll revision exercise. Bhowanipore, set to vote on April 29, has seen 47,111 names removed from its approximately 200,000-strong voter list, with an additional 14,154 entries still under adjudication, highlighting the urgency of the party's efforts.

TMC's recalibrated strategy for the constituency will center on an intense, month-long door-to-door campaign, leveraging its extensive network of ground-level workers to reconnect with voters and address issues arising from the SIR deletions.

Key Leaders to Participate in Campaign Kickoff

The event will feature prominent TMC figures, including national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim, party state president Subrata Bakshi, and South Kolkata district president Debasish Kumar. All eight TMC councillors from Bhowanipore are also expected to attend, underscoring the party's coordinated approach.

Trinamool's campaign slogan for Bhowanipore, "Unnoyon Ghore Ghore, Ghorer Meye Bhowanipore-e" (Development in Every Home, The Daughter of the House in Bhowanipore), aims to resonate with local voters by emphasizing grassroots development and familial ties.

Electoral Challenges and Voter Base Impact

Despite TMC securing overall leads in Bhowanipore during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party trailed in five wards. Gains in the remaining three wards helped offset these losses, but the SIR deletions have notably affected the voter base in those key areas, adding complexity to the upcoming polls.

Ahead of the campaign launch, CM Banerjee expressed her concerns on social media, stating, "I remain deeply concerned about the ongoing challenges faced by many citizens regarding their rightful place in electoral rolls. I have approached the appropriate legal forums, including the Hon'ble courts, with the hope that the constitutional rights of every individual will be protected."

She further assured the people of Bengal, "I want to assure the people of Bengal that I stand with each one of you, across all religions, castes and communities, as a member of your family. At a time when divisive forces seek to fracture our social fabric, we must remain committed to unity and mutual respect. Bengal has always stood as a beacon of inclusiveness, where every faith is honoured and every voice matters. Let us continue to uphold the values of peace, fraternity and dignity that define us."

Expanding Campaign Across Bengal

Following the Bhowanipore meeting, Mamata Banerjee will shift her focus to north Bengal, where she is slated to address at least three public meetings on Tuesday at Alipurduar Parade Ground, Matigara, and Maynaguri. All north Bengal districts are scheduled to vote on April 23, making this a critical phase of the campaign.

Simultaneously, Abhishek Banerjee will embark on his own campaign trail starting March 24 from South 24 Parganas. According to the TMC's announced schedule, he will criss-cross the state for seven days, covering both northern and southern regions to bolster the party's outreach.

In his Eid message, Abhishek emphasized unity, posting on X, "At a time when divisive forces seek to pit one against another, we must remain united. India belongs equally to all its people, and its strength lies in its diversity. I am confident that the people of Bengal will continue to reject hatred and stand in defence of our collective spirit."

This campaign launch marks a pivotal moment in West Bengal's political landscape, as TMC navigates voter list issues and aims to secure support ahead of the 2026 assembly elections through a focused, grassroots-driven approach.
