Bhagwant Mann's Thunderous Reception at Healthcare Launch Sends Message to AAP Delhi Leadership
Mann's Cheers vs Kejriwal's Restrained Welcome at Punjab Event

Thunderous Applause for Mann Contrasts with Restrained Response to Kejriwal at Healthcare Launch

The corridors of power in Punjab witnessed a telling political moment during the launch of the universal healthcare scheme, where Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann emerged as the undeniable star of the event. As Mann rose to speak at the Chief Minister Sehat Yojana rollout on Thursday, the crowd erupted into sustained applause that refused to die down, creating an atmosphere of overwhelming support for the state leader.

A Stark Contrast in Reception

In a striking contrast, while announcing the same healthcare scheme, Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal received what observers described as dutiful slogans with almost restrained enthusiasm. The difference in crowd response was palpable, with Mann being met with thunderous cheers that visibly overwhelmed the Chief Minister. "This love does not let us rest. Even if I thank you with every breath, it will not be enough," Mann emotionally told the cheering crowd.

The moment spoke volumes about shifting political perceptions within Punjab. Not long ago, Kejriwal was seen as Punjab's harbinger of change, capable of pulling massive crowds and commanding keen attention. That aura has noticeably faded, with the current dynamics suggesting how Delhi's perceived interference increasingly weighs on AAP's prospects in the state.

Political Ripples Beyond the Healthcare Event

The political landscape of Punjab continues to witness intriguing developments beyond the healthcare scheme launch. A recent leaked video from a closed-door Congress meeting featuring former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi stirred political unease when he argued for equal representation for Scheduled Castes within the party.

This triggered an unexpected reaction when Congress-turned-BJP leader Kewal Singh Dhillon publicly invited Channi to join the BJP, claiming the party treats everyone equally. However, Dhillon's individual outreach appeared more impulsive than strategic, reportedly made without consultation with BJP's state leadership and leaving several senior leaders visibly uncomfortable.

Administrative Developments and Political Defenses

In administrative circles, Punjab has two IAS officers informally dubbed charge-sheet officers:

  • Principal Secretary for Water Resources Krishan Kumar
  • PUNSUP Managing Director Sonali Giri

Giri has recently begun aggressively clearing long-pending files at PUNSUP, the state government undertaking responsible for wheat and paddy procurement and subsidized distribution of essential commodities. With multiple unresolved issues related to storage and procurement, Giri has taken charge of stalled cases and revived pending charge-sheets, a move that has clearly unsettled her subordinates.

Meanwhile, AAP MLA from Kharar, Anmol Gagan Maan, has gone on a clarification spree over corruption allegations. Speaking at a function in her constituency, she declared that if she had ever indulged in corruption or accepted even 50 paise, she should be left with nothing. Emphasizing that her sole aim is village development, Maan claimed she has never sought bribes from BDPOs, sarpanches or DCs.

This is not the first time Mann has launched such a defense. In 2024, she had alleged that certain officers were indulging in corruption and collecting bribes while claiming the booty had to be shared with the top. Whether her repeated clarifications will put the issue to rest remains to be seen as Punjab's political and administrative landscape continues to evolve.
