In a momentous occasion that marked a first in the 75-year history of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, President Droupadi Murmu delivered a landmark address on Thursday, calling upon elected representatives to maintain discipline in their conduct and articulation while practicing self-restraint in their service to the people.
A Homecoming and Emotional Return
Expressing deep emotional connection to her home state, President Murmu stated in Odia, "Maa ti mora kede nijara" (this soil is mine), as she recalled her journey from a humble village in Mayurbhanj to the nation's highest constitutional position. This address marked the first time a sitting President has spoken in the Odisha Legislative Assembly since its establishment.
Murmu, who served as an MLA and minister in the assembly between 2000 and 2009, grew nostalgic during her speech. "I have addressed many state assemblies and even foreign parliaments, but speaking in Odisha Vidhan Sabha is special. This House taught me everything — how to behave politically, how to present issues. My foundation was laid here," she emotionally shared.
Nation-First Approach and Public Conduct
The President delivered a powerful message to legislators, urging them to adopt a "nation-first" approach in their work. "People have elected you with hope and aspiration. Work for the poorest. Your conduct and articulation matter — people watch what you do inside and outside the House. Technology makes everything visible. Lead by example so that people follow you," she advised.
Murmu emphasized that elected representatives must uphold discipline in both their 'acharana' (conduct) and 'uccharana' (articulation), stressing the importance of self-restraint while working for public welfare.
Odisha's Rich Legacy and Future Vision
The President highlighted Odisha's significant contributions to India's cultural heritage and freedom struggle, mentioning:
- The transformation of Chandashok to Dharmashok on the banks of Daya River
- The Paika rebellion led by Buxi Jagabandhu
- Sacrifices of heroes like Veer Surendra Sai and Baji Rout
- Contributions of icons including Netaji Subhas Bose, Biju Patnaik, Rama Devi, Sarala Devi, and Parvati Giri
Murmu praised Chief Minister Mohan Majhi's initiatives for digital governance and women empowerment, specifically welcoming:
- Subhadra cash incentive schemes for women
- Bonus for paddy farmers
- Industrialization efforts across the state
"Odisha has immense mineral wealth and maritime heritage. All stakeholders must work together for progress," she emphasized, while also noting India's emerging global position as a major economy that continues to gain international trust.
Political Leaders Hail Historic Moment
Chief Minister Mohan Majhi described President Murmu's address as "a golden chapter in the democratic history of the state." He highlighted that her rise from an ordinary tribal family to the President's office symbolizes the strength of Indian democracy. "Her words inspire us to work with peace, unity, and dedication for a prosperous Odisha by 2036," Majhi stated.
Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik called the President's address "a great honour for Odisha and its people," expressing pride that "the daughter of this land, who began her political career here 25 years ago, now graces us as the President of India." He recalled Odisha's historic role in national integration and the creation of a separate province on linguistic grounds.
The historic event not only celebrated Odisha's political heritage but also set a new benchmark for legislative conduct and public service, with President Murmu's personal journey serving as an inspiration for current and future generations of leaders.
