Nagpur Civic Authority Initiates Demolition Drive for SAI Sports Complex Project

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) commenced a significant demolition operation on Friday, targeting unauthorized constructions spread across approximately 87.25 acres of land designated for the regional centre of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in the Wathoda and Tarodi (Khurd) areas. This land parcel, situated behind Symbiosis College, constitutes a portion of a larger 140-acre tract proposed for transfer to SAI to facilitate the development of advanced sports infrastructure in the region.

Heavy Security and Civic Machinery Deployed for Enforcement

Supported by a substantial police force of around 100 personnel, the NMC's enforcement team initiated the demolition of illegal structures early in the morning, encountering resistance from local residents. The operation was spearheaded by officials from the estate department and the Nehru Nagar zone, who mobilized six JCB machines and over 60 civic staff members. The drive was conducted under the direct supervision of officiating assistant municipal commissioners Vikas Raibole and Harish Raut, along with enforcement superintendent Sanjay Kamble.

Progress Amid Legal Challenges and Local Protests

Out of the 76 identified unauthorized houses, shops, and tin sheds in the area, the demolition team successfully removed 18 tin structures on the first day. By the afternoon, more than 12 additional structures had been pulled down. However, the operation encountered legal obstacles as six residents secured stay orders from the court, temporarily preventing the demolition of a few units. Despite ongoing protests and increasing pressure from affected locals, the civic squad persisted with its actions under stringent security measures.

The affected plots are categorized under Khasra numbers 53, 54, and 60. Specifically, one tin shed in Khasra 53 was demolished, while five out of eight sheds in Khasra 54 were removed; the remaining three structures benefited from court protection. In Khasra 60, all 12 tin sheds were demolished by late evening. Prior to the drive, the Nehru Nagar zone office had issued notices on January 30, alerting occupants to vacate the premises or face forcible eviction.

Phased Approach to Land Clearance for National Sports Facility

The total 140-acre allocation to SAI encompasses 13.18 acres in Wathoda and 74 acres in Tarodi (Khurd). The current phase focuses on clearing 87.25 acres, which primarily consist of sparsely populated stretches, for formal transfer. The remaining 54 acres, located in densely populated pockets, will be addressed in a subsequent phase, indicating potential for further confrontations in the future.

With the administration firmly committed to handing over the land for the establishment of a national-level sports facility, this crackdown highlights the escalating tensions between urban expansion, illegal encroachments, and public infrastructure ambitions in Nagpur. The situation underscores the complex challenges faced by civic bodies in balancing development goals with community interests and legal frameworks.
