Nagpur LPG Crisis Intensifies Amid Prolonged Booking System Failure

For the third consecutive day, the city of Nagpur is grappling with a severe liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder shortage, as hundreds of citizens struggle to secure refills due to a persistent technical failure in the booking system. The district administration appears to be a passive observer, despite the escalating crisis that has left residents waiting for hours in long queues outside gas agencies and godowns.

Scenes of Desperation Across the City

Long queues have become a common sight outside numerous gas agency offices and storage facilities across Nagpur. Desperate consumers, hoping to obtain a cylinder before supplies run out, have been arriving as early as 4 a.m. to beat the rush. However, many have returned home empty-handed after enduring hours in the scorching heat, as the non-functional booking system prevents the issuance of cylinders without the necessary one-time passwords (OTPs).

The frustration among residents is palpable, with the situation showing no signs of improvement. Sources within the collectorate have revealed that officials from oil companies have not responded to calls from government authorities, further complicating efforts to resolve the issue.

Official Silence and Lack of Action

Civic chief Vipin Itankar has remained unresponsive to inquiries regarding the crisis and the steps being taken to address it. This lack of communication has only added to the public's anxiety. Distributors argue that while the district administration has been conducting inspections to curb hoarding and black marketing, it must first tackle the root cause: the technical failure in the booking systems.

Several distributors have urged the collectorate to immediately engage with oil marketing companies and demand the restoration of these systems. They warn that without resolving this issue, consumer panic will only intensify, leading to more chaotic scenes at agency offices.

Distributors Voice Concerns Over Safety and System Breakdown

Gas distributor Mahendra Gawai reported that repeated attempts to contact company officials about the system breakdown have gone unanswered. Jayprakash Tiwari, president of the Distributors Association of India's Maharashtra chapter, highlighted the growing anger among consumers, which is now spilling over into confrontations at agency offices.

"Even on Saturday, consumers got angry with my agency staff and briefly gheraoed us. Things are getting seriously risky. I already have police protection, but until the oil companies resolve their system failure issue, citizens will continue to face problems," Tiwari stated.

He added that agency staff are increasingly facing the wrath of customers who are unable to book cylinders, creating a volatile environment.

Uncertain Supply and Anxious Residents

With the booking systems still not fully operational and supply remaining uncertain, anxious residents continue to line up outside gas agencies. Their hope is that the crisis will ease before their kitchens run completely dry. The ongoing failure has not only disrupted daily life but also raised serious questions about the preparedness and responsiveness of both local authorities and oil companies in handling such emergencies.

As the situation unfolds, the need for swift action becomes ever more critical to prevent further escalation and ensure that Nagpur's citizens have access to this essential commodity.
