Nagpur Municipal Corporation Confronts Severe Staffing Shortage
In a startling revelation, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is grappling with a massive staffing crisis, with nearly 48% of its sanctioned posts lying vacant. This severe shortage is critically hampering civic administration and service delivery across the city.
Alarming Vacancy Figures Unveiled
During a departmental review meeting chaired by municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar on Monday, officials disclosed that out of 17,981 sanctioned positions, only 9,322 employees are currently in place. This leaves a staggering 8,659 posts unfilled, creating significant operational gaps in various municipal functions.
The meeting, which focused on the general administration and legal departments, was held at the commissioner's chamber in the NMC headquarters. Senior officials including additional commissioners Vasumana Pant and Vaishnavi B, chief engineer Manoj Talewar, chief accounts and finance officer Sadashiv Shelke, and deputy commissioners Nirbhay Jain and Milind Meshram were in attendance.
Commissioner's Directive for Immediate Action
Taking serious note of the alarming situation, Commissioner Vipin Itankar issued urgent directives to address the staffing shortfall. He instructed officials to immediately initiate the recruitment process for all vacant posts and prepare comprehensive proposals for pending appointments.
Furthermore, Itankar emphasized the need to pursue the state government for officers on deputation, as the civic body requires approximately 19 officers from the state cadre to strengthen its administrative framework.
Structural Breakdown and Cadre Analysis
Deputy commissioner Nirbhay Jain provided detailed insights into the corporation's organizational structure, revealing that the NMC operates with 205 cadres spanning Class 1 to Class 4 categories under the revised framework. This comprehensive breakdown highlights the widespread nature of the vacancy crisis across different levels of municipal operations.
Commissioner Itankar specifically directed officials to prepare and expedite proposals regarding hiring processes that are currently pending at the state level. He stressed the importance of consistent follow-up with state government authorities to ensure timely resolution of these staffing issues.
