Nagpur Water Supply Under Scrutiny as Municipal Corporation Draws from Contaminated Source

In a startling revelation that contradicts official statements, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's water works department has been drawing water from Gorewada lake despite ongoing sewage contamination concerns. This practice, previously denied by officials, has sparked significant public health worries and political controversy in the city.

Congress Corporator Exposes Contradictory Statements

Congress corporator Shailesh Pandey took action on Saturday after receiving numerous complaints from local residents about foul odors, dead fish, and suspected sewage inflow into Gorewada lake. During his inspection, Pandey contacted superintending engineer Shweta Banerjee to verify the situation. Contrary to her statements during the March 20 general body meeting, Banerjee confirmed that NMC does indeed draw water from Gorewada lake, particularly when water levels decrease.

"In the same general body meeting, Banerjee admitted that sewage water was being discharged into Gorewada lake," Pandey revealed to media sources, highlighting the contradictory nature of the official statements.

Viral Audio Recording Reveals Confrontation

The controversy intensified when an audio recording of Pandey's conversation with Banerjee went viral. In the recording, Pandey is heard confronting the official: "You told the House that no water is drawn from Gorewada. Today, your system is pumping water from the same lake where sewage is entering. This is misleading the general body and endangering the lives of citizens."

Under mounting pressure, municipal officials maintained that only a limited quantity of water—approximately 5% to 6%—is drawn from the lake during periods of low storage. They emphasized that this water undergoes treatment at the Water Treatment Plant before distribution to households.

Official Assurances Fail to Convince Residents

Banerjee claimed that water samples are regularly tested in government laboratories and consistently meet permissible standards. However, these assurances have failed to convince both residents and opposition leaders, who point to visible signs of pollution including dead fish and persistent foul smells around the lake area.

Local residents expressed serious doubts about the efficacy of the treatment process and the actual quality of water entering the municipal supply system. The visible pollution indicators have raised fundamental questions about whether treatment can adequately address contamination at the source.

Mayor Terms Issue "Very Serious" After Evidence Presentation

On Monday, Pandey escalated the matter by submitting a formal memorandum to mayor Neeta Thakre, accompanied by the audio recording of his conversation with Banerjee. After listening to the evidence, Mayor Thakre described the issue as "very serious" and observed that misleading the general body reflects a disregard for the apex decision-making body of the civic administration.

Additional Pollution Source Compounds Concerns

Adding another layer to the growing controversy, reports indicate that a significant volume of untreated sewage from the Dabha area is being discharged directly into Gorewada lake. This development intensifies fears about contamination at the very source of the water supply, raising questions about the fundamental safety of Nagpur's water infrastructure.

The situation highlights critical gaps in municipal transparency and water management practices, with citizens now questioning the reliability of official statements regarding their most essential resource—clean drinking water.
