Nashik Cracks Down on LPG Misuse, Prioritizes Domestic Supply

Nashik District Administration Issues Stern Warning Against LPG Cylinder Misuse

The Nashik district administration has taken a firm stance against the illegal diversion of domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes, implementing strict measures to ensure household and institutional supply remains uninterrupted during an ongoing shortage. Flying squads have been deployed across the district to conduct surprise inspections at various establishments, targeting potential misuse.

Supply Prioritization for Domestic Consumers and Educational Institutions

In a decisive move, the administration has announced that available LPG stock will be reserved exclusively for domestic consumers and educational institutions, including schools, hostels, and colleges. This prioritization aims to safeguard essential needs amid supply chain disruptions. The decision was formalized during a review meeting chaired by Sambhajinagar Collector Dileep Swami on Friday, which assessed the current LPG shortage situation.

Collector Ayush Prasad emphasized that there is no shortage of LPG for domestic users in Nashik, but officials have observed an unusual spike in demand recently. "Oil marketing companies are adjusting their operations to meet this rising requirement using existing infrastructure and supply systems," he stated. However, to maintain equity, hotels, restaurants, and industrial units will temporarily need to rely on alternative fuel sources, as they will not receive commercial LPG cylinders or LNG tanks through regular dealer channels.

Impact on Commercial and Industrial Sectors

The restriction has raised concerns among local businesses. Utsav Machar, President of the Chamber of Marathwada Industries and Agriculture (CMIA), highlighted the need for clarity on supply resumption. "Industries are expecting guidance so that instead of abruptly shutting down plants and incurring hefty losses, we can plan maintenance and other activities," he explained.

Similarly, Shivaji Patil, President of the Aurangabad District Hotels and Restaurants Owners Association (ADHRA), expressed apprehension during the meeting. He noted that the restriction could significantly disrupt daily operations, particularly kitchen functions in hotels and restaurants that depend heavily on commercial LPG cylinders.

Enhanced Surveillance and Enforcement Measures

The district administration has mandated heightened surveillance over LPG cylinder movement and delivery. A district-level committee is actively monitoring the supply and distribution of domestic cylinders to ensure they reach only registered domestic consumers. "Cylinders meant for household use must be delivered strictly to registered domestic consumers. Any diversion will result in action against the distributor or individuals involved," warned Collector Prasad.

Flying squads will inspect a wide range of establishments, including:

  • Hotels and restaurants
  • Eateries and food stalls
  • Shops and commercial outlets
  • Industrial units

This proactive approach aims to identify and penalize illegal usage, ensuring that the limited LPG resources are allocated fairly during the supply disruption. The administration's efforts underscore a commitment to balancing commercial needs with essential domestic and educational requirements in the region.
