Nashik Mayor Mandates Kumbh Mela Coordination Committee to Address Communication Gaps

In a decisive move to streamline preparations for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, Nashik Mayor Himgauri Aher has directed the civic administration to establish a dedicated coordination committee. This panel, to be formed under the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority (NTKMA), aims to foster better communication between elected representatives and the authority overseeing the massive religious event.

Committee Composition and Rationale

The newly proposed committee will include senior corporators with prior experience from previous Kumbh Melas, alongside high-ranking officials from the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC). This directive was issued during a General Body meeting, where corporators from various political parties voiced strong concerns. They alleged that elected representatives were being excluded from critical discussions regarding Kumbh-related projects and the appointment of agencies tasked with executing key infrastructure works.

Protests Over Rejected Road and Bridge Proposals

The urgency for improved coordination was underscored by widespread protests from corporators regarding the rejection of major road proposals. These projects are deemed essential for managing the anticipated surge in vehicular traffic during the Simhastha Kumbh Mela. According to official reports, the civic administration had submitted a comprehensive proposal for 70 road projects. However, the NTKMA approved only 28 of these, sparking significant discontent among local leaders.

Detailed figures reveal the scale of the disparity: the NMC proposed the construction of roads spanning approximately 240 kilometers, with an estimated cost exceeding Rs 3,000 crore. In contrast, the NTKMA cleared only 28 roads, covering a combined length of 117.41 kilometers at a cost of Rs 1,270 crore. Similarly, out of 17 proposed bridges across the Godavari River and its tributaries, only 4 received the necessary approvals.

Official Statements and Financial Constraints

Nashik Municipal Commissioner, Khatri, addressed the House, stating, "We have formally requested the Kumbh Mela Authority to grant approval for the remaining 50 roads, which cover an additional 123 kilometers, to ensure adequate infrastructure for the Kumbh Mela." This appeal highlights the ongoing efforts to secure funding and permissions for these vital projects.

City Engineer Sanjay Agrawal provided further context, explaining that Nashik's existing road network extends around 2,400 kilometers. As per standard norms, roads typically require re-laying every three years to maintain safety and usability. "Due to persistent financial constraints, we were unable to undertake relaying work after the last Kumbh Mela in 2015. Consequently, we proposed 240 kilometers of roads this time to address the backlog. However, approvals have been granted for only 117 kilometers, which poses a significant challenge for traffic management during the event," he elaborated.

Implications for Kumbh Mela Preparations

The formation of the coordination committee is expected to mitigate such issues by ensuring that elected representatives are actively involved in decision-making processes. This step is crucial for aligning local governance with the broader objectives of the NTKMA, ultimately aiming to enhance infrastructure and logistical planning for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela. The move reflects a proactive approach to addressing communication breakdowns and financial hurdles that could impact the smooth execution of one of India's largest religious gatherings.
