Navjot Singh Sidhu, the former president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), has been entirely excluded from the newly announced state Congress body. The new committee retains Amarinder Raja Warring as PPCC chief and Partap Bajwa as Leader of the Opposition, leaving Sidhu without any official role. Political analysts interpret this as a clear indication that Sidhu's political career within the Congress party may be effectively over.
Background of Sidhu's Political Decline
Sidhu has largely stayed away from active politics since losing the 2022 Assembly election from the Amritsar East constituency, a seat he had previously held as a Congress representative. His wife, Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu, was suspended from the party in December after publicly alleging that “a briefcase full of Rs 500 crore” was needed to become Chief Minister of Punjab—a remark she made about her husband's inability to secure the post. She resigned from the Congress on February 1, 2026, nearly two months after her suspension.
Recent Attempts to Reconnect with Voters
In April 2026, Sidhu attempted to rebuild his public image by sharing videos on social media showing him engaging with Amritsar residents—playing with children, drinking tea, and eating kachori at a local shop. These efforts were seen as a way to gauge public support ahead of upcoming elections. However, they did not translate into a political comeback within the party structure.
Failed Mobilization Efforts
After the 2022 Assembly defeat, Sidhu's last major task for the Congress in Amritsar was to rally local leaders—including former Deputy CM OP Soni, former Cabinet minister Rajkumar Verka, MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, and others—to counter the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) influence in the Municipal Corporation. Despite these efforts, the AAP managed to secure a majority in the Municipal Corporation House in April 2022 by winning over several Congress councillors.
Sidhu's Political Journey and Break with BJP
Sidhu's political career began with the BJP, where he was brought into politics by late senior leader Arun Jaitley. He represented Amritsar in the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2014. He resigned from the BJP on September 14, 2016, citing Punjab's interests over party loyalty. This followed his resignation from the Rajya Sabha and the formation of his own political outfit, Awaz-e-Punjab, which gained support from former hockey captain Pargat Singh and MLAs Simarjit Singh Bains and Balwant Singh Bains.
Leaving the BJP on bitter terms, Sidhu unsuccessfully contested the 2017 Assembly election on a Congress ticket from Amritsar East, the same constituency his wife had represented as a BJP candidate in 2012. He later became PPCC chief but resigned after the Congress's defeat in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.
Impact on Sidhu's Political Future
The exclusion from the new PPCC body is widely seen as the end of Sidhu's political career within Congress. Analysts note that the party leadership, led by Amarinder Raja Warring, has consolidated control without Sidhu's influence. Sidhu's wife's resignation and public criticism of the party further strained his position. With no official role and diminished support from local leaders, Sidhu's ability to stage a political comeback appears limited.
