In an incident that has left villagers in awe and calling it a divine miracle, a 20-day-old newborn girl survived a terrifying ordeal in Sevni village of Janjgir–Champa district, Chhattisgarh. The infant was snatched from her mother's arms by a monkey and thrown into an open well, yet emerged alive thanks to a combination of quick thinking, fortunate circumstances, and timely medical aid.
The Terrifying Sequence of Events
The dramatic incident unfolded on Wednesday when the baby's mother, Sunita Rathore, was sitting on the porch of her house with her infant daughter. According to family members, four to five monkeys were jumping on a nearby terrace when one suddenly lunged toward the mother and child. In a shocking moment, the primate grabbed the newborn and ran onto the rooftop, creating panic throughout the neighborhood.
As terrified relatives raised alarms and burst firecrackers in an attempt to scare the animal away, the monkey made a horrifying decision. It flung the helpless infant into a neighboring open well before fleeing the scene. Villagers immediately rushed to the spot, acting with remarkable swiftness to save the child.
The Race Against Time: Rescue and Recovery
Villagers quickly lowered a bucket into the well, and within minutes, managed to pull the infant out. The baby had swallowed a considerable amount of water during the ordeal, but in what family members describe as a twist of fate, she did not sink completely. Her father, Arvind Rathore, believes the diaper she was wearing provided crucial buoyancy, helping her stay afloat during those critical moments until rescue arrived.
What followed was another stroke of extraordinary luck. Rajeshwari Rathore, a nurse posted at the Sargawan primary health centre, happened to be in the village to attend a Bhagwat Katha religious gathering. She rushed to the scene immediately upon hearing about the incident.
The nurse expertly cleared water from the baby's mouth, administered CPR, and warmed her body. Moments later, the newborn began crying—a sound that confirmed she had started breathing again and brought immense relief to everyone present.
Medical Treatment and Stable Condition
The infant was first taken to the district hospital for initial treatment and was later shifted to the ICU of a private hospital for specialized care. Doctors have reported that her condition is stable and showing continuous improvement, much to the relief of her family and the entire village community.
Arvind Rathore, who works at a power plant and was on duty when the incident occurred, credited his daughter's survival to multiple factors. "If my daughter is alive today, it is because a nurse was present at that exact moment—and because of the diaper she was wearing," he stated emotionally.
Growing Concerns About Wildlife Encounters
The father also raised serious concerns about the increasing presence of wild animals in rural residential areas. He explained that orchards and crops are drawing animals closer to human settlements, creating dangerous situations for children and families.
"Such encounters are putting our children at growing risk," he warned, highlighting a broader issue facing many rural communities across India where human-wildlife conflict is becoming more frequent.
