The Odisha government on Thursday suspended Sukra Madhi, the Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Jharbandh police station in Bargarh district, for his alleged links with ganja smugglers. A disciplinary proceeding is contemplated against the IIC for gross misconduct and dereliction of duty, and he has been placed under suspension, according to an order issued by Director General of Police Y B Khurania.
Earlier Suspensions and Dismissal
Earlier in the day, Madhi was transferred to the district police headquarters. Additionally, one Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and a constable were suspended, while a home guard of Jharbandh police station was dismissed from service for their alleged involvement with the smugglers.
Drug Racket Busted
Nearly ten days ago, Bargarh police busted a major drug smuggling racket and seized 1,914 kg of ganja, valued at approximately Rs 4 crore. Five individuals were arrested in connection with the case. During the investigation, the involvement of Jharbandh police station officers with the ganja mafia came to light.
Specific Actions Taken
Bargarh Superintendent of Police Prahlad Sahal Meena suspended ASI Kaushik Sahu and constable Chittaranjan Panda, and dismissed home guard Debarchan Niali from service.
The Seizure Incident
On May 5, during routine patrolling, Sub-Inspector Bina Tirkey of Paikmal police station in the Jharbandh area intercepted a truck with an Uttar Pradesh registration number around 9 pm. During the search of the vehicle, police recovered 67 packets containing 1,914 kg of ganja. The consignment was being transported from the Patnagarh side towards Raipur.
This incident highlights the ongoing efforts of the Odisha Police to crack down on drug trafficking and ensure accountability within the force.
