Opposition slams TN govt over girl's murder in Coimbatore

Chennai: Opposition parties, including DMK, AIADMK, and PMK, have strongly condemned the TVK government following the abduction, alleged sexual assault, and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Sulur, Coimbatore district.

Udhayanidhi Stalin's Remarks

Leader of the opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin stated that the state has witnessed more than 30 major crimes within just 12 days of the TVK government assuming office. He urged Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay to prioritize law and order to prevent such incidents from recurring. Stalin highlighted that sexual assaults, ganja smuggling, abductions, murders, attacks by rowdies, and alleged excesses by ruling party functionaries have raised serious questions about the state's law and order situation.

Referring to the Coimbatore incident, which has triggered nationwide outrage, Stalin said the brutal crime sent shock waves across India and led to overnight protests by residents demanding justice. The voice seeking justice is echoing from all sides, and people are staging protests throughout the night condemning this cruel act, he added. Demanding swift action, Stalin called for severe punishment for the real culprits at the earliest.

AIADMK's Response

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami expressed shock, stating it was painful to see the TVK government fail miserably in preventing such a horrific crime. Instead of being a reels government, it should be a real government, he wrote on X, demanding stern action against the perpetrators. He noted that reports of the girl being sexually assaulted before being murdered have triggered widespread fear and anger among the public. The lack of immediate, decisive action exposes severe shortcomings in the state's law and order machinery, he emphasized.

Former AIADMK minister and Thondamuthur MLA S P Velumani, co-leading a rebel AIADMK faction, urged the government to pay special attention to the safety of women and children and take appropriate measures to ensure such incidents, which also occurred during the previous DMK regime, do not happen again.

Other Opposition Reactions

PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss demanded swift justice, while AMMK general secretary T T V Dhinakaran said the rising wave of crimes against women and children in the state has raised serious questions over the prevailing law and order situation and the very foundation of societal humanity.
