Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday stated that the police took an independent decision to deny permission for the proposed event organized by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). The minister's remarks came amid growing controversy surrounding the event and speculation over whether the organizers would be allowed to proceed with their convention.
Police Decision Defended
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Parameshwara emphasized that the police department acted on its own accord based on law and order considerations. "The police took a call independently. There was no external pressure or interference in the decision to deny permission," he said.
The event, which was scheduled to be held in the city, had sparked debate after reports emerged that the police were reluctant to grant permission. Parameshwara clarified that the police assessed the potential for public disturbance and made a decision in the interest of maintaining peace.
Controversy Surrounding CJP
The Cockroach Janata Party, a fringe political group, had announced plans to hold a convention in Bengaluru. However, the police denied permission citing concerns over public order. The organizers have criticized the decision, claiming it is an infringement on their democratic rights.
Parameshwara, however, dismissed these allegations, stating that the police have the authority to regulate events to prevent any untoward incidents. "No one is above the law. If there is a genuine threat to public safety, the police have the right to intervene," he added.
Speculation Quashed
The minister also addressed speculation that the state government had a hand in the denial. He reiterated that the police department functions independently and that the government does not interfere in such operational matters. "The police are capable of making their own assessments. We trust their judgment," Parameshwara said.
The controversy has drawn attention to the activities of the Cockroach Janata Party, which has been known for its unconventional political stunts. The group has previously faced legal issues over its events.
As of now, the organizers have not announced any alternative plans for the convention. The police have maintained that they will continue to monitor the situation and take necessary actions to ensure law and order in the city.
