In a remarkable display of dedication, Geetanjali Hawaldar, the Congress party's candidate for Ward 18 B in Kolhapur city, is campaigning vigorously while being eight months pregnant. She is not only expecting the arrival of her baby soon but also expects the voters to recognize her unwavering commitment and support her bid in the local elections.
A Campaign on Foot for Ground-Level Insights
Hawaldar has chosen a unique approach to connect with her constituents. Instead of using vehicles, she walks through the ward to better understand the challenges faced by residents. This method has allowed her to identify several pressing issues firsthand. She has observed critical problems including poor road conditions, inadequate drainage systems, and persistent garbage management issues during her walks.
Addressing the voters, Hawaldar made a pointed argument about development versus short-term benefits. She stated that the Rs 1,500 financial aid provided to Ladki Bahin beneficiaries would not offer a lasting solution. "If, even in this situation, I am campaigning for the development of my ward and my city, then they should give their votes to me and see what development I will do in the next five years," she asserted, linking her personal sacrifice to a promise of sustained progress.
Door-to-Door Efforts with Community Support
Her campaign strategy involves intensive door-to-door outreach. She is accompanied by a team of around 20 women supporters and holds two sessions daily: from 9 am to noon and again from 4 pm to 7 pm. The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive and caring.
Hawaldar expressed being both overwhelmed and humbled by the warmth shown by voters, particularly women. She carries water, lemon juice, and fruits, but often finds residents offering her tea, water, and refreshments. Many urge her to sit and rest. Interestingly, she has also met voters who are medical professionals; they often offer her advice on necessary precautions and care for her and her unborn child during this demanding period.
Seizing an Opportunity for Representation
The decision for Geetanjali Hawaldar to contest emerged after Ward 18 B was reserved for women from backward classes. Her husband, Mahesh Hawaldar, a Congress worker for the past decade, explained their motivation. "We want to develop our ward. When it got reserved for women from the backward classes, we decided not to lose the opportunity and fielded Geetanjali," he said. He also emphasized that the family ensures her health is carefully monitored amidst the busy campaign schedule.
Geetanjali Hawaldar's candidacy is a powerful statement in Kolhapur's political landscape. It underscores a narrative of perseverance, direct public engagement, and a focus on long-term infrastructural development over temporary sops. Her campaign trail, marked by personal commitment and community interaction, sets a distinctive tone for the upcoming elections.
