Puducherry CM Vows to Double Girl Child FD in Re-election Bid

Puducherry Chief Minister Pledges Major Boost to Girl Child Welfare Scheme

In a significant pre-election promise, All India NR Congress (AINRC) founder and Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy has committed to doubling the fixed deposit amount under the Chief Minister’s Girl Child Protection Scheme if the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by his party, is re-elected to power. Currently set at Rs 50,000, the fixed deposit will be increased to Rs 1 lakh for every girl child born in the Union territory, a move aimed at enhancing financial security and empowerment for women.

Campaign Announcement and Political Context

Rangasamy made this announcement while campaigning for AINRC candidate Vaiyapuri Manikandan in Muthialpet on Monday. The constituency has seen political shifts, with former MLA and AIADMK deputy general secretary Manikandan leaving his party to join AINRC after Muthialpet was allocated to the Congress splinter group. This promise is part of a broader strategy by the AINRC-BJP coalition government to roll out welfare measures ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, including a Rs 500 hike in old age pensions and an increase in the first instalment of the integrated housing scheme to Rs 1 lakh.

Details of the Girl Child Protection Scheme

The scheme, designed to support families, particularly those below the poverty line (BPL) and meeting specific residency requirements in Puducherry, involves depositing the amount in the name of the girl child as a fixed deposit in a nationalised bank or government-approved financial institution. The accumulated sum, along with interest, is handed over to the beneficiary when she turns 18 years old, specifically to assist with higher education or marriage expenses. Key objectives include preventing female infanticide, improving the sex ratio, and ensuring financial independence for women.

Political Reactions and Electoral Implications

Opposition parties, including Congress and DMK, have criticised the timing of the announcement, labeling it as a stunt to garner votes in the upcoming polls. The hike is widely perceived as an attempt to consolidate the women’s vote bank, reflecting the competitive political landscape in Puducherry. In the electoral fray, AINRC, leading the NDA, is contesting from 16 seats, while BJP is contesting from 10 seats, and AIADMK and LJK are contesting two seats each. On the opposition side, Congress is contesting 16 seats and DMK 14, with VCK declining an offer from DMK to contest independently from three constituencies, and CPI and CPM also running independently, leading to intra-bloc contests in many areas.

Broader Welfare Initiatives and Future Outlook

This promise aligns with the government’s recent welfare push, highlighting a focus on social security and development ahead of the 2026 elections. By targeting girl child welfare, the initiative seeks to address long-term issues of gender inequality and economic support, potentially shaping voter sentiment in the region. As political campaigns intensify, such measures are expected to play a crucial role in the electoral dynamics of Puducherry.
