Pune RTO: 9% Vehicle Registration Drop During Akshay Tritiya

Pune RTO Records Significant Decline in Vehicle Registrations During Akshay Tritiya 2026

The Regional Transport Office in Pune has released concerning figures showing a substantial decrease in vehicle registrations during the Akshay Tritiya festival week in 2026 compared to the same period last year. According to the official data, regular vehicle registrations dropped by 9%, while electric vehicle registrations plummeted by a dramatic 66%.

Comparative Registration Numbers Reveal Clear Downturn

During the Akshay Tritiya period from April 12 to 19, 2026, the Pune RTO registered only 7,579 regular vehicles and 306 electric vehicles. This represents a significant decline from the corresponding festive week in 2025, when 8,298 regular vehicles and 893 electric vehicles were registered between April 23 and 30.

RTO officials have commented on these figures, suggesting that the traditional practice of purchasing vehicles during festivals is gradually fading away. A senior RTO official explained, "While Akshay Tritiya remains an auspicious festival, most people now prefer to buy gold rather than vehicles during this time. Vehicle registrations have been increasing overall throughout the year, and we expect this trend to continue. The electric vehicle segment has shown remarkable improvement and will likely see growth in registration numbers moving forward."

Similar Pattern Observed During Gudi Padwa Festival

The declining trend in festive vehicle registrations isn't limited to Akshay Tritiya. During the Gudi Padwa festival this year, regular vehicle registrations at Pune RTO decreased by approximately 10%, while electric vehicle registrations fell by 28%. In 2025, the office registered 13,190 regular vehicles and 2,124 electric vehicles during Gudi Padwa, compared to just 11,937 regular vehicles and 1,530 electric vehicles in 2026.

Another RTO official provided context for these numbers, stating, "People are now purchasing new vehicles throughout the year rather than waiting for specific festivals. Personal vehicles have become increasingly important due to limitations in Pune's public transportation system. This shift in consumer behavior is evident from the fact that registrations in the financial year 2025-26 were substantially higher than those in 2024-25."

Annual Registration Figures Show Overall Growth Despite Festive Dips

Despite the recent festive period declines, annual vehicle registration statistics reveal an upward trajectory. In the calendar year 2025, total vehicle registrations in Pune reached 330,000, compared to 300,000 in 2024. More significantly, during the financial year 2025-26, vehicle registrations stood at 345,455, a notable increase from 304,610 in the previous financial year 2024-25. Electric vehicle registrations also experienced a substantial surge during this period.

Consumer Perspectives Highlight Changing Priorities

Nitin Kulkarni, a working professional residing in Kothrud, shared his experience that reflects this changing trend. "I purchased a two-wheeler a month ago because waiting for a festival would have been too long. We can always take new vehicles to temples for auspicious blessings regardless of when we buy them. My sister needed my old two-wheeler for commuting to college, so I urgently required a new vehicle for office travel. In Pune, relying on public transportation is challenging, expensive, and often unreliable," he explained.

This shift in consumer behavior suggests that practical needs and convenience are increasingly outweighing traditional festive purchasing patterns when it comes to vehicle acquisition in Pune.
