Punjab Congress Lambasts AAP Government's Four-Year Tenure as Era of 'Loot and Betrayal'
The Punjab Congress launched a scathing attack on Monday, dismissing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's assertion that it has fulfilled all its promises within four years. Instead, the opposition party characterized this period as one dominated by 'loot, betrayal, and wasted opportunities', accusing the administration of misleading the public with exaggerated achievements.
Congress Leaders Allege Fiscal Mismanagement and Broken Promises
Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring led the charge, claiming that the AAP government has systematically exploited and diverted Punjab's resources to fund election campaigns in other states. 'The AAP government should also claim credit for pushing Punjab to the bottom of the Fiscal Health Index among all states in the country,' Warring stated, highlighting a recent NITI Aayog report. He further alleged that the state's total debt has surged past Rs 4.17 lakh crore, pushing Punjab toward bankruptcy.
Warring also pointed to unfulfilled commitments, such as the promise of providing Rs 1,000 monthly financial assistance to women, which remains unimplemented after four years. 'The government perfected the art of lying and bluffing, but can no longer mislead the people of Punjab,' he asserted, adding that the administration has created an environment where 'gangsters are ruling the roost'.
Opposition Accuses Government of Masking Shortcomings with Publicity Stunts
Leader of the opposition in the Punjab assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, echoed these criticisms, accusing Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of attempting to deceive the public through a recent press conference that he labeled as 'nothing more than a publicity exercise aimed at masking serious shortcomings'. Bajwa declared, 'The reality is that the AAP government delivered one of the most disappointing tenures Punjab witnessed in recent times.'
Bajwa raised alarms about the deteriorating law and order situation, citing an increase in organized crime, extortion threats to businessmen, attacks on police stations and political leaders, and other criminal activities over the past four years. 'Punjab has rarely seen such a breakdown in law and order. Instead of ensuring security and stability, the government allowed criminal elements to grow more confident,' he remarked.
Healthcare and Drug-Free Promises Fall Short, Congress Claims
Turning to public health, Bajwa questioned the government's claims of strengthening healthcare, noting that government hospitals across Punjab are grappling with a severe shortage of specialists. He revealed that nearly half of the sanctioned posts are vacant, forcing ordinary citizens to seek expensive private treatment. 'This exposes the hollow nature of the government's healthcare claims,' he added.
Additionally, Bajwa criticized the government's failure to deliver on its pledge to make Punjab drug-free. 'Drug abuse continues to destroy families across the state, and young lives are still being lost to overdoses while the government remains busy projecting an image of success,' he said, referring to promises made by CM Mann and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal.
The Congress's allegations paint a grim picture of the AAP government's tenure, emphasizing fiscal decline, security lapses, and unkept promises as key issues plaguing Punjab.
