Punjab Assembly Committee Calls for Immediate Farm Policy Implementation
The Punjab Vidhan Sabha Committee on Agriculture and Allied Activities has strongly recommended the prompt implementation of the state's agriculture policy. This move aims to significantly enhance the economic conditions of farmers and farm labourers across Punjab.
Key Recommendations from the 2025-26 Report
Chaired by Sardulgarh MLA Gurpreet Singh Banawali, the committee's report for the fiscal year 2025-26 was recently presented in the Assembly. The panel emphasized several critical measures to support the agricultural sector.
Transition to Solar Power: One of the primary recommendations involves shifting agricultural motors in rural areas to solar power. This initiative is designed to reduce energy costs and promote sustainable farming practices.
Legal Action for Tubewell Connections: The committee urged the government to pursue legal recourse in the National Green Tribunal. This step is intended to permit new tubewell connections in blocks that are currently not classified as dark zones, thereby addressing water access issues.
Additional Proposals to Aid Farmers
Cost Coverage for Equipment Theft: In cases of theft involving motors, transformers, wires, and other essential equipment from farmers' fields, the panel suggested that the government should bear the replacement costs. This measure seeks to alleviate financial burdens on affected farmers.
Promotion of Organic Farming: To encourage organic agriculture, the committee proposed establishing organic food markets at both block and district levels. These markets would facilitate the sale of organic vegetables, supporting healthier food options and boosting local economies.
The comprehensive report underscores the committee's commitment to revitalizing Punjab's agricultural landscape through innovative and supportive policies.
