In a significant breakthrough against cross-border terror networks, the Punjab Police's Counter Intelligence unit, in a joint operation with Jalandhar Rural Police, has arrested a key operative of the proscribed Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) from Jalandhar. The arrest led to the recovery of an improvised explosive device (IED) packed with 1.3 kg of high explosive, along with shrapnel and ball bearings, indicating preparations for a high-impact attack aimed at disturbing public peace.
Arrest and Recovery
The operation, conducted on Sunday, dismantled an ISI-sponsored BKI terror module operated by foreign-based handlers. The arrested operative is believed to be a crucial link in the supply chain of explosives and logistical support for the module. The IED, designed to cause maximum casualties, was seized before it could be deployed, according to officials.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav confirmed the development, stating that the timely action averted a major terror threat and safeguarded innocent lives. “In a breakthrough against cross-border terror networks, Counter Intelligence Jalandhar, in a joint operation with Jalandhar Rural Police, busts an #ISI-sponsored #BKI terror module operated by foreign-based handlers and arrests a key operative from Jalandhar,” DGP Yadav posted on X.
Legal Proceedings
An FIR has been registered at Patara police station in Jalandhar Rural under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Explosive Substances Act, and the Arms Act. The charges include conspiracy to wage war against the state, possession of explosives with intent to endanger life, and unlawful possession of arms. The accused will be produced before a court to seek police remand for further interrogation.
The recovery of shrapnel and ball bearings suggests the module was planning a high-impact attack, possibly in a crowded area to maximize casualties. The Punjab Police have not disclosed the identity of the arrested operative, citing ongoing investigations.
Ongoing Investigation
DGP Yadav said that further investigations are underway to establish the complete terror network, including foreign handlers, local support networks, and all forward and backward linkages involved in the conspiracy. “Punjab Police remains committed to dismantling terror networks, curbing organized crime and maintaining peace and security in the state,” he added.
The arrest is part of a wider crackdown on terror modules with links to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Babbar Khalsa International, a Khalistani separatist group, has been designated as a terrorist organization by India. Previous operations have resulted in the arrest of several operatives and recovery of arms and explosives.
Authorities are also probing the source of the high explosive and whether the module had any sleeper cells or sympathizers within the state. The Punjab Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
