Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc on Hubballi Roads
Continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days has transformed major road stretches in Hubballi into treacherous pathways, with waterlogging and deep potholes causing immense hardship for commuters. Several arterial roads, including the busy Gokul Road, have become nearly impassable, leading to bumper-to-bumper traffic during peak hours.
Key Stretches Worst Affected
The worst-affected stretches include the road from KMF to Unkal Lake, where water has accumulated up to two feet in some places. Commuters reported spending over an hour to traverse a distance that usually takes 10 minutes. Auto-rickshaw drivers are refusing to ply on these routes, leaving many stranded. According to local resident Mahesh Patil, “The situation is pathetic. We have been complaining for years, but no action has been taken.”
Potholes Add to Misery
In addition to waterlogging, numerous potholes have emerged, damaging vehicles and causing accidents. A two-wheeler rider, Ravi Kumar, said, “I fell into a pothole yesterday and injured my knee. The roads are a death trap.” The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has been criticized for its poor drainage system and lack of preventive maintenance.
HDMC Blames Unseasonal Rains
HDMC officials attribute the crisis to unseasonal rains and claim they are working to clear blocked drains. However, residents argue that the problem is chronic and stems from years of neglect. “Every year, the same story repeats. The authorities only act after the damage is done,” said social activist Geeta Joshi.
Impact on Daily Life
The waterlogging has also affected schools and businesses, with many remaining closed. Buses are being diverted, adding to commuter woes. The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted more rainfall in the coming days, raising fears of further deterioration.
