N. Rangasamy was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Puducherry for the fifth time on Friday, taking the reins of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in the union territory. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan at a ceremony held at the Raj Nivas.
Coalition Government with BJP Support
The new government is a coalition between Rangasamy's All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which extended its support to the AINRC-led alliance. The swearing-in event was attended by prominent leaders, including Union Minister and BJP leader G. Kishan Reddy, along with several other dignitaries.
Rangasamy's Political Journey
Rangasamy, a seasoned politician, has previously served as Chief Minister four times. His political career spans several decades, marked by his leadership in regional politics and his ability to form alliances with national parties. This fifth term comes after the 2021 assembly elections, where the AINRC-led alliance secured a majority, with the BJP winning six seats.
Priorities for the New Term
In his address after taking oath, Rangasamy outlined his government's priorities, focusing on development, infrastructure, and welfare schemes. He emphasized the need to work in coordination with the central government to ensure the progress of Puducherry. Key areas include improving healthcare, education, and creating employment opportunities for the youth.
Reactions and Significance
Political analysts view this as a significant development for the NDA's presence in southern India. The alliance between AINRC and BJP is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the NDA's footprint in the region. Opposition parties, including the Congress and DMK, have criticized the alliance, questioning the BJP's influence in the union territory.
The swearing-in ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for Puducherry, with Rangasamy pledging to work for the welfare of all sections of society. The government is expected to announce its cabinet in the coming days.
