A tragic incident unfolded in Ludhiana's New Agar Nagar on Sunday night, where a retired ex-serviceman, working as a security guard at a private bank, shot his son dead in full public view before taking his own life by consuming poison.
Details of the Incident
The accused, Surinder Singh (67), a retired havildar, chased his son Gursharan Singh alias Ginni (38), a taxi driver, for at least 500 metres. He fired two shots from his licensed .12-bore rifle, killing his son. Later, Surinder ingested a poisonous substance and succumbed to death.
Background of the Family
According to local residents, the father and son frequently engaged in arguments. Surinder's wife passed away in 2019. His two daughters are settled abroad, while he lived with Gursharan. The police have contacted the daughters for crucial information.
Police Investigation
Inspector Vijay Chaudhary, SHO of Sarabha Nagar police station, stated that Gursharan had a dispute with his father, leading to the attack. When police arrived at their house, the main gate was bolted from inside. After repeated knocking went unanswered, officers broke the gate open. They found Surinder unconscious in bed, foaming at the mouth. He was rushed to the hospital but died during treatment. A murder FIR has been filed against Surinder.
Police revealed that the father and son would fight frequently, though the exact reasons remain unclear. Dinner plates found in the house suggest they were eating when an argument erupted. Surinder first fired at Gursharan, but the bullet hit the wall. Gursharan ran out to save his life, but his father chased and shot him.
The investigation is ongoing, with police awaiting statements from Surinder's daughters to shed light on the motive.
