Road Repair Work Stalled in Kapurthala Urban Estate
Residents of Urban Estate and Seed Farm in Kapurthala have voiced serious concern over the prolonged delay in road repair and recarpeting, despite numerous appeals, RTI applications, meetings with officials, and a peaceful dharna. Authorities had assured that the work would be completed by March 2026, but only a small stretch was recarpeted before the project was abruptly halted.
Repeated Delays and Lack of Clarity
According to residents, various reasons have been cited for the delay, but no clear timeline for completion has been provided. With the monsoon season approaching, followed by winter, there are fears that the project may be postponed again, forcing another year of waiting. Roads in several parts of Urban Estate continue to deteriorate, causing inconvenience and safety issues. The situation in Seed Farm is even more alarming, where roads are in far worse condition and no repair work has started.
Residents Express Frustration
Anuj Anand, advocate and former president of the Urban Estate Welfare Society, stated, “Despite submitting numerous representations to the authorities and filing RTI applications over the years, residents have seen little progress on the ground. Residents are unable to understand why the work was initiated and then stopped midway. The repeated delays have led to widespread disappointment. Owing to the lack of road repair work, several streets are riddled with large potholes and become waterlogged even after light rainfall, causing considerable inconvenience to residents and passers-by. In some areas, even walking on foot has become extremely difficult.”
Other Pending Development Works
Resident Vikas Uppal noted that residents are also awaiting the construction of a long-pending Sports Complex, Community Hall, and boundary walls. However, given the slow pace of development, these projects may remain incomplete for years. Residents have warned that if the pending works are not resumed and completed within a reasonable timeframe, they may seek legal recourse or organize another peaceful dharna to press for their demands.
