Rs 400 Crore Allocated for Agumbe Ghat Road Widening, Tunnel Proposed
Rs 400 Crore for Agumbe Ghat Road, Tunnel Plan in Focus

The Union government has sanctioned a substantial sum of Rs 400 crore for a crucial infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic on the challenging Agumbe Ghat Road in Karnataka. The announcement was made by Shivamogga MP BY Raghavendra on Saturday following a key meeting with district officials.

Tunnel vs Widening: The Core Debate

While the funds were originally allocated for road widening, the MP revealed that the project faces significant environmental and logistical hurdles, with landslides being a primary concern. After chairing the meeting, Raghavendra suggested that constructing a tunnel might be a more viable solution than simply widening the existing road. He confirmed that the funds are available, but the final approach requires careful study.

"The amount was sanctioned for road widening in this stretch, but there are environmental concerns too as landslides are also a major concern," Raghavendra told reporters. He emphasised that a decision on the best approach will involve consultations with the state government, officials, and environmentalists. Experts from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will study the tunnel proposal.

Broader Infrastructure Push for Shivamogga

This project is a significant part of a larger Rs 1,500 crore National Highway development plan earmarked for Shivamogga district. Beyond the ghat road, the MP also addressed urban mobility and safety within Shivamogga city. He instructed officials to construct skywalks or underpasses at major intersections to protect pedestrians.

The identified locations include:

  • Sandesh Motor Circle
  • Government and Private Bus Stations
  • Alkola Circle

Furthermore, existing underpasses at Shivappa Nayaka and Amir Ahmad Circles will be opened for public use during non-monsoon seasons. Plans are also underway for new underpasses at Shantamma Layout and Gundappa Shed roads.

Addressing Stalled Projects and Future Plans

The meeting also tackled stalled initiatives. Raghavendra highlighted that the Tarikere bypass project is currently stuck due to an issue concerning tree felling. He urged the forest department to resolve this matter promptly to allow work to resume.

In addition to road projects, the discussion touched upon other ongoing developments in the region, including the progress of the Shivamogga-Shikaripura railway line. The comprehensive review underscores a concerted push to enhance connectivity and infrastructure in the district, balancing development with environmental considerations.
