In a significant push for infrastructure and heritage in his constituency, Punjab Cabinet Minister Aman Arora on Thursday unveiled a series of development projects with a total worth of Rs 54.4 crore for Sunam Udham Singh Wala. The announcement, made after paying homage at a local memorial, focuses on upgrading a historic site and addressing critical civic amenities for thousands of households.
Revamping a Martyr's Legacy and Civic Infrastructure
The cornerstone of the new initiatives is the comprehensive renovation and beautification of the Shaheed Udham Singh Martyrdom Memorial. Minister Arora detailed that the Punjab government has allocated Rs 21.17 crore for this upgrade, which will involve expanding the basic infrastructure and enhancing the site's aesthetics to honour the freedom fighter's sacrifice.
Alongside the memorial work, the plan includes the construction of two grand martyrdom gates dedicated to Shaheed Udham Singh. Arora emphasized that these gates would be built according to public sentiment, with the core intention of ensuring future generations remember and comprehend the unique martyrdom of the national hero.
A Plea for the Martyr's Remains and Solving Sewerage Woes
During his interaction with journalists, Minister Arora made a poignant appeal to the Union Government. He urged the BJP-led central administration to initiate diplomatic efforts with the British government to bring back the final relics or remains of Shaheed Udham Singh to India. He stated his desire for these relics to be respectfully housed at the upgraded memorial in Sunam, a move he had advocated for previously.
Shifting focus to long-standing civic issues, Arora highlighted the incompetence of previous governments that left approximately 3,500 households in Sunam city without sewerage connections. To rectify this, a major project worth Rs 29.54 crore has been launched. This project involves laying a 30-kilometre pipeline network to connect all remaining households, aiming to provide the entire city with proper sewerage facilities.
Aggressive Timeline for Constituency Development
Aman Arora provided a comprehensive picture of development in his constituency, revealing that works worth Rs 85 crore are already in progress at full speed. With the addition of the newly announced Rs 54.4 crore projects, the total development portfolio now stands at around Rs 140 crore.
The minister set a clear deadline for all these projects, stating that the government has targeted July 31, 2026, for their completion. This integrated approach signifies a major infrastructural overhaul for the Sunam area, combining cultural preservation with essential urban utility upgrades.
