Sacrilege Incident Reported in Samana, Punjab

A fresh sacrilege incident has been reported in the town of Samana, located in the Patiala district of Punjab. On Tuesday, pages of the sacred Gutka Sahib were discovered scattered near a shop on Bhawanigarh Road, prompting immediate concern among local residents.

Religious Protocols Followed

In accordance with religious norms, the sacred remains of the Gutka Sahib were carefully collected and transported to Gurdwara Chulla Sahib. This action was taken to ensure proper respect and handling of the religious texts, which hold significant importance in Sikhism.

Context of Ongoing Protests

The incident occurred approximately a kilometre from Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Chowk, where a protest has been ongoing. Demonstrators are demanding a stricter law against sacrilege, specifically seeking legislation that provides stringent punishment for the desecration of religious texts.

This demand is linked to the pending Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Bill, 2025, which proposes harsh penalties for such acts but remains under consideration by authorities. The protest highlights growing concerns over religious sensitivity and legal protections in the region.

Impact on Local Community

Local traders have expressed support for the call for stricter legislation, acknowledging the need to address sacrilege. However, they also noted that prolonged protests and related disruptions have adversely affected business activities in the area, adding an economic dimension to the social and religious issues at play.

The investigation continues as authorities work to bring those responsible to justice and maintain peace in Samana.
