Samrat Choudhary Ascends as Bihar's First BJP Chief Minister, Ushering in a New Political Era
In a historic political shift, Samrat Choudhary has been elected as the new chief minister of Bihar, becoming the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to assume the state's top executive role. This development concludes the long tenure of JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar, who served an unprecedented 10 stints as chief minister over two decades, marking a significant transition in Bihar's governance landscape.
A Pledge for Progressive Governance and Development
Following his unanimous election as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislative party, Choudhary expressed his commitment to Bihar's advancement in a post on social media platform X. "The caravan of Bihar's development will continue to advance. With the trust of all the esteemed leaders of the NDA, we will take Bihar's development, progress, and good governance to new heights with renewed energy," he stated, outlining his vision for the state's future under his leadership.
Political Background and Strategic Significance
Born in 1968 into a politically influential family, Choudhary has deep roots in Bihar politics. His father, Shakuni Choudhary, was a six-time MLA and former minister, while his mother, Parvati Devi, also served as an MLA from Tarapur. Choudhary himself was elected MLA from Tarapur in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, having previously represented the Parbatta constituency in Khagaria district twice, in 2000 and 2010.
His elevation is viewed as a strategic maneuver by the BJP to consolidate support among the Koeri or Kushwaha community, a politically significant Other Backward Class (OBC) group in Bihar. This move aims to strengthen the party's social base in the post-Nitish Kumar political environment, leveraging Choudhary's community ties and his visibility during the anti-Nitish phase of state politics.
Path to Leadership and Ceremonial Transition
Choudhary's name for the chief ministerial position was proposed by outgoing CM Nitish Kumar himself at the NDA legislative party meeting. Subsequently, Choudhary, accompanied by alliance leaders, staked a claim to form the new government at Lok Bhawan around 5:50 PM on Tuesday. Governor Syed Ata Hasnain formally invited him to take the oath of office at 10:50 AM on Wednesday, following his election as NDA legislative party leader.
BJP national president Nitin Nabin extended congratulations, expressing confidence in Choudhary's leadership. "I am fully confident that under the guidance of the esteemed Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji and your able leadership, Bihar will further advance on the path of progress, prosperity, and self-reliance, infusing new energy and momentum into the resolve of 'Vikshit Bihar, 2047'," Nabin remarked.
Extensive Political Career and Party Affiliations
With over three decades in active politics, Choudhary has been associated with multiple parties before his rise in the BJP. His career began with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) led by Lalu Prasad in the late 1990s, where he served as a minister in the Rabri Devi government. In 2014, he left the RJD along with several MLAs to join the Janata Dal (United), becoming a minister in the Jitan Ram Manjhi-led cabinet. After Manjhi formed the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), Choudhary joined that party before making his final major shift to the BJP in 2017.
His ascent within the BJP has been rapid. Appointed as Bihar BJP vice president in 2018, he later became president of the party's Bihar unit in March 2023, succeeding Sanjay Jaiswal. In January 2024, following Nitish Kumar's return to the NDA fold, Choudhary was appointed deputy chief minister, setting the stage for his current elevation.
Personal Anecdotes and Community Celebrations
Known as an aggressive orator and a disciplined BJP soldier, Choudhary's personal touch remains evident. Residents of Lakhanpur village, his hometown, celebrated his selection as chief minister, describing it as a "golden day" for the region. They fondly recalled his childhood passion for cricket, noting that he continued to engage in the sport even amid his political commitments, encouraging local sports activities.
The transition was set in motion earlier when Nitish Kumar, Bihar's longest-serving chief minister, resigned after chairing his final cabinet meeting. This move followed his recent election to the Rajya Sabha, interpreted as a shift toward national politics. In a social media post, Nitish expressed his cooperation with the new government, stating, "I have done a lot of work for the people of Bihar. Recently, I have decided to leave the post of chief minister. Therefore, after today's cabinet meeting, I met the Governor and submitted my resignation to him. Now the new government will look after the work here. The new government will have my full cooperation and guidance."
Soon after Nitish's resignation, Choudhary was unanimously elected leader of the BJP legislative party at the party headquarters in Patna, with his name proposed by outgoing deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha, solidifying his path to the chief minister's office.
