Sasikala's Campaign Van Revives Memories of Jayalalithaa's Roadshows
In a striking echo of past political campaigns, former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa's close aide V K Sasikala has taken to the roads of southern Tamil Nadu, delivering speeches from her campaign vehicle. This style directly mirrors the iconic roadshows of the late AIADMK leader, where Jayalalithaa would address crowds from her van, with Sasikala often seated in the back, observing the gatherings of constituents and media.
A Shift to the Front Seat and a New Political Battle
Now, Sasikala has moved to the front, actively campaigning for her newly formed party, the All India Puratchi Thalaivar Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AIPMMK). She contests against the AIADMK's 'two leaves' symbol, positioning herself as an alternative in the Tamil Nadu political landscape. At Thiruparankundram in Madurai, she urged voters to choose between "a rule of betrayers and evil forces or one by selfless leaders," before proceeding to Arapalayam.
Symbolic Gestures and Indirect Jabs at AIADMK Leadership
Her campaign features symbolic nods to Jayalalithaa's era. For instance, at Arappalayam cross road, her party's candidate stood with folded hands on a platform about 300 feet away, reminiscent of how Jayalalithaa's candidates were presented during her campaigns. In her brief, five-minute speeches, Sasikala takes indirect jabs at AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS), criticizing the current leadership without always naming him directly.
Focus on Southern Districts and Emotional Appeals
Sasikala has fielded candidates in 75 constituencies, with a strong focus on southern districts, aiming to secure Thevar votes. Her campaign is not just political but deeply personal. At Theni's Andipatti, she turned emotional, recalling, "As soon as I reached here, my mind goes back to the days when I visited the place with Amma." Supporters in the crowd reassured her, with one shouting, "We are there for you."
Visual Imagery and Political Persona
Campaign banners place Sasikala alongside MGR and Jayalalithaa, with posters labeling her 'Thyaga Thalaivi' (Leader of Sacrifice) instead of the familiar 'Chinnamma'. Political observers note that while her presentation echoes Jayalalithaa, her delivery differs. Political commentator Durai Karuna points out, "Sasikala's speech is slow and paced but lacks the modulation of Jayalalithaa, who often turned aggressive while targeting M Karunanidhi." He added that Sasikala initially tried to replicate Jayalalithaa's persona by adopting her hairstyle and trademark green saree but toned it down after facing criticism.
A Campaign Steeped in Legacy and Contrast
Overall, Sasikala's campaign is a blend of homage and challenge, evoking the legacy of Jayalalithaa while carving out a new path in Tamil Nadu politics. Her efforts highlight the enduring influence of the former chief minister and the ongoing dynamics within the state's political arena.
