Satheesan Slams Vijayan's Double Standards in Kerala Political Clash Over Rebel Candidate
In a sharp escalation of political tensions in Kerala, Opposition leader V D Satheesan has launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, accusing him of blatant double standards and political opportunism. The controversy erupted after Vijayan criticized the United Democratic Front (UDF) for extending support to G Sudhakaran, a rebel candidate from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the Ambalappuzha constituency.
Questioning CPM's Selective Morality
Satheesan vehemently questioned the Chief Minister's stance, asking why Vijayan considers it a sign of weakness for the Congress party to support those leaving the CPM, while the CPM itself has a long history of welcoming defectors from the UDF. "Where is the justice in saying that those who leave Congress or the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) can be given seats by the CPM, but the UDF cannot support those leaving the CPM?" he demanded, highlighting what he called a hypocritical approach.
To bolster his argument, Satheesan cited specific instances where the CPM has fielded former UDF leaders. He pointed to prominent examples such as KT Jaleel, V Abdurahiman, and KP Mustafa, all of whom were previously associated with UDF constituents but later joined the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and received political positions. "This selective morality exposes the CPM's opportunistic nature," Satheesan asserted.
Recent Examples and Electoral Maneuvers
Further intensifying his critique, the Opposition leader referenced the recent Palakkad bypoll, where the CPM chose a candidate who had initially approached the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for a seat. "This shows the CPM's willingness to align with any force for electoral gain, undermining their own principles," Satheesan remarked, challenging the party's consistency.
In a bold move, Satheesan dared Chief Minister Vijayan to a face-to-face debate on these issues, rather than relying on social media posts. "Instead of hiding behind Facebook, let's have an open discussion to expose these double standards," he challenged, aiming to bring the conflict into the public arena.
Congress Leader Chennithala Alleges Threats and Hypocrisy
Adding to the political firestorm, Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala alleged that the CPM is deeply upset over Sudhakaran's alignment with the UDF. He claimed that following the Chief Minister's intensified attacks against Sudhakaran, CPM workers have issued death threats, with Sudhakaran's driver reportedly receiving such threats. "This intimidation tactic is unacceptable and reflects the CPM's desperation," Chennithala stated.
Chennithala also called out the CPM's double standards in handling political defections. He noted that UDF leaders who have joined the LDF were often given positions and recognition, while those moving in the opposite direction face vilification and attacks. "This hypocrisy undermines the democratic process in Kerala," he emphasized.
Accusations of Political Expediency
The Congress leader accused the CPM of further hypocrisy, stating that while the party claims to stand with victims, it often sides with the accused when politically convenient. He cited the recent arrest of filmmaker Ranjith, a known CPM sympathizer, alleging that the government acted only because of ongoing elections. "If this were not the case, the LDF would have supported him. This is the third complaint against the director, yet action was delayed," Chennithala claimed, suggesting political motives behind the timing.
Electoral Strategies and Predictions
Chennithala also alleged that the CPM and LDF are relying on alliances with the BJP, Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), and People's Democratic Party (PDP) to secure electoral gains. However, he asserted that secular Kerala would decisively reject such attempts. "The people of Kerala value secularism and will not tolerate these divisive tactics," he declared.
Looking ahead to the political landscape, Chennithala expressed confidence in the UDF's prospects. He stated that current trends indicate the UDF is poised to win over 100 seats in the upcoming elections, positioning it to form the next government. "The public is tired of double standards and opportunism. Change is imminent," he concluded, signaling a robust challenge to the ruling front.
This political clash underscores the deepening rivalries in Kerala as parties gear up for electoral battles, with accusations of hypocrisy and opportunism taking center stage in the discourse.
