SGPC Executive Committee Takes Decisive Action on Multiple Fronts
The executive committee of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) convened a crucial meeting on Monday, resulting in significant decisions regarding a long-pending mercy petition, inter-state water disputes, and upcoming religious commemorations.
Rajoana Mercy Petition Referred Back to Akal Takht
After extensive deliberations, the committee resolved to refer the controversial mercy petition of Balwant Singh Rajoana back to the Akal Takht for final review. This case has remained unresolved for fourteen years, creating a complex legal and religious deadlock.
SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami emphasized that the original petition was filed under direct orders from the Akal Takht, which serves as the highest temporal seat of Sikhism. With Rajoana recently demanding withdrawal of the petition, the committee determined that only the Sikh clergy could provide definitive guidance on this sensitive matter.
The executive committee has committed to following whatever specific directions emerge from the Akal Takht's review, effectively placing the final decision-making authority back with Sikh religious leadership.
Sharp Criticism of Central Government's Water Management
Turning to matters of state resources, the committee issued a strong rebuke against what it termed discriminatory practices by the central government regarding Punjab's water rights. The focus of criticism was the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), which oversees critical water resources for the region.
Dhami characterized the current central approach as undermining Punjab's historical and geographical interests, warning that any policy perceived as diluting the state's rights over its river waters would face vigorous opposition from the SGPC and broader Sikh community.
The committee's statement represents a significant escalation in the ongoing debate about water distribution and management between Punjab and neighboring states, with the SGPC positioning itself as a defender of regional interests against perceived central overreach.
Major Religious Commemorations Approved
Beyond these contentious issues, the SGPC greenlit several important cultural and religious initiatives. For the 650th anniversary of Bhagat Ravidas, a dedicated sub-committee has been established to develop comprehensive celebration plans.
This group will consult extensively with Ravidasia community leaders to ensure the programs are inclusive and representative of the diverse Sikh tradition. Additionally, final arrangements were confirmed for the 400th Foundation Day of Kiratpur Sahib, scheduled to take place from April 29 to May 1.
Relief Package for Accident Victims
In a humanitarian gesture, the committee approved a relief package for families affected by a recent tragic road accident near Fatehgarh Sahib. The victims were returning from Khalsa Sajna Diwas (Baisakhi) celebrations at Anandpur Sahib when the accident occurred.
The SGPC will provide financial assistance of ₹1 lakh to each bereaved family, demonstrating the organization's commitment to supporting community members during times of crisis.
These decisions collectively highlight the SGPC's multifaceted role as both a religious authority and advocate for Sikh interests across legal, political, and social domains.
