Jagadish Shettar's Political Comeback Gains Traction in Karnataka

Speculation is intensifying within the Bharatiya Janata Party about its next state president. Strong indications now suggest that former chief minister Jagadish Shettar may make a significant return to Karnataka politics. Shettar, a prominent Lingayat leader from North Karnataka, currently serves as the Lok Sabha MP from Belgaum.

Groundwork for 2028 Assembly Elections

Political observers note that Shettar appears to be laying the groundwork to contest from his home constituency of Hubli-Dharwad Central in the 2028 assembly elections. His frequent weekend visits to this former assembly seat have added considerable momentum to the speculation. This constituency, earlier known as Hubli Rural, holds deep connections to Shettar's long political career.

When contacted about these developments, Shettar offered a measured response. "I am not thinking about assembly elections now," he stated. "I'm focusing on my parliamentary constituency." However, he did acknowledge that some party functionaries and workers are mounting pressure on him to return to state politics.

A Turbulent Political Journey

Shettar's political journey has seen notable twists in recent years. He made waves ahead of the 2023 assembly elections when he joined the Congress party after the BJP denied him a ticket. This switch proved brief, as he soon returned to the BJP fold and successfully contested the Lok Sabha election from Belgaum.

This move took him away from Hubli-Dharwad Central, a constituency he represented for six consecutive terms. Following his Lok Sabha victory, Shettar largely stayed away from routine organizational work within the party. Many interpreted this as dissatisfaction with the party leadership, particularly regarding what he perceived as inadequate consideration for his supporters in Dharwad district.

Central Leadership's Consent

According to Shettar's associates, the central party leadership has given their consent for his return to state politics. Hubli-Dharwad Central provides him with an established organizational base, making it a logical choice for his political reentry. His increased presence in this constituency coincides with growing involvement in state-level party activities.

Shettar has been attending BJP events across Karnataka and is playing a crucial role in mediating between sparring senior functionaries. This mediation aims to ensure smoother coordination within the party organization. As part of these efforts, he has visited Davanagere and Bagalkot districts in recent times.

Rebuilding Influence Within BJP

Within the BJP, Shettar continues to be regarded as a senior leader with considerable influence, especially within the Lingayat community. His recent appearances with party colleagues have drawn attention to his renewed political engagement. Speaking about his current activities, Shettar explained, "Based on party needs, I am working to bring consensus between some functionaries. It is purely party work."

Political analysts now view Shettar's renewed engagement in organizational and mediation roles as a strategic effort to rebuild his position within the state unit. This positioning comes ahead of anticipated political developments in Karnataka. The Lingayat community's support remains crucial in state politics, and Shettar's return could significantly impact BJP's strategy in North Karnataka.

As the speculation continues, all eyes remain on whether this veteran politician will formally announce his return to the state political arena. The coming months will likely provide clearer indications of his political trajectory and the BJP's plans for Karnataka's leadership.
