Shimla's Century-Old Ice-Skating Club Seeks Government Intervention for New Building
In a significant development, members of the historic Shimla Ice-skating Club have resolved to appeal to the state government to construct a new building for the club prior to the conversion of the iconic ice-skating rink into an all-weather facility. This decision emerged from an emergency meeting convened today to address the urgent situation following government directives to vacate the premises by March 19.
Government's Renovation Plan Sparks Club Concerns
The state government has announced plans to transform the traditional ice-skating rink into a modern all-weather facility, a move that necessitates the demolition of the club's main building and adjacent servant quarters. While the upgrade aims to enhance recreational infrastructure, club members express apprehension about the potential disruption to their longstanding activities.
During the emergency gathering, attendees unanimously agreed to demand that the government allocate space for the club's operations and storage by erecting a new structure on adjacent land as part of the project's initial phase. They emphasized that subsequent phases should only proceed once these requirements are satisfactorily addressed.
Club President Highlights Heritage and Operational Challenges
Manpreet Singh, president of the Shimla Ice-skating Club, voiced serious concerns regarding the immediate evacuation order. "An abrupt directive to vacate will completely disrupt our club's activities, leaving us without adequate space to store essential belongings," he stated. Singh further revealed that the club has received only verbal instructions thus far, with no formal written orders issued by the authorities.
He elaborated on the club's stance, asserting, "We are not opposed to the development of modern facilities; however, it is crucial to preserve the club's identity and rich traditions." To this end, the club has decided to form a delegation that will soon engage with government officials to formally present their demands.

Singh underscored the historical significance of the Shimla Ice-Skating Club, describing it as a heritage institution that has served the community for over a century. "To safeguard this 106-year-old establishment, the government must prioritize providing an alternative rink and arrangements for the club," he urged.
