Shiv Sena Leader Ambadas Danve Faces Backlash for Collaring BJP Candidate in Panchayat Samiti Election
In a dramatic turn of events during a panchayat samiti election in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, former leader of the opposition in the legislative council, Ambadas Danve of Shiv Sena (UBT), has come under severe criticism for physically confronting a BJP candidate. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, saw Danve holding BJP candidate Kalyan Gaikwad by the collar and roughing up rival political party workers, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation.
Election Tensions Escalate into Physical Confrontation
Tensions ran high during the election for the chairman and deputy chairman posts of the panchayat samiti after Danve alleged that three of his party's elected members were coerced into switching loyalties. Videos of the tussle between political party workers were recorded by multiple cameras at the spot and have since been widely circulated on social media, amplifying the controversy.
Danve claimed that three members of his party had been "not reachable" since Sunday, including one each from the Pandharpur constituency, Vadgaon Kolhadi, and ward number 102 of Vadgaon Kolhadi. This development had deeply upset party workers and local politicians, leading to the volatile situation.
Allegations of Coercion and Threats
Speaking after the confrontation, Danve accused BJP leaders of luring or threatening members from other parties to influence the outcome of elections to local bodies. "It was necessary to respond, which is why I confronted the BJP candidate. We are trying to ensure our members do not bend under such pressure. What will happen next cannot be predicted. Remember, this is Shiv Sena," Danve warned, emphasizing his party's stance against perceived intimidation.
He further stated, "We are waiting for them. They must act according to the party's ideology, else the party will be forced to take action against them," referring to the missing members and underscoring the internal disciplinary measures at stake.
BJP Responds with Condemnation and Legal Action
Despite the altercation, BJP candidate Kalyan Gaikwad, whom Danve had held by the collar, later won the election to the post of chairman. In response to the incident, BJP leaders have maintained that they are considering registering a First Information Report (FIR) against Danve for getting physical with their candidate and issuing threats.
BJP city district president Kishor Shitole criticized Danve's actions, saying, "Ambadas Danve is a senior politician and such behaviour is not expected from him. His reaction was nothing but venting out of frustration in the face of imminent defeat. Instead of threatening other party's workers, he should focus on keeping his party workers and office bearers together."
The BJP has reiterated its intent to pursue legal recourse, highlighting the seriousness with which they view the physical altercation and the potential implications for political decorum.
Broader Implications for Political Conduct
This incident raises significant questions about the conduct of political leaders during elections and the methods employed to secure victories in local body polls. The use of physical force and public confrontations, as seen here, not only tarnishes the image of the involved parties but also sets a concerning precedent for future electoral processes.
As the videos continue to circulate and both sides trade accusations, the focus remains on how such conflicts will be addressed legally and politically, with potential repercussions for party unity and public trust in democratic institutions.
