Sonowal: Barak Valley Now Gateway to SE Asia Under NDA

Sonowal Kicks Off BJP Campaign, Highlights Barak Valley's Metamorphosis

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, officially launched the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) campaign trail for the upcoming assembly elections on Friday. Speaking at rallies in Silchar, he asserted that the Barak Valley has undergone a dramatic transformation under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, shifting from what he described as an "isolated island of neglect" to a strategic "gateway to Southeast Asia."

Campaign Rallies Focus on Integration and Development

Addressing enthusiastic crowds at the Doloo Tea Estate in the Udharbond constituency and later in Silchar city, Sonowal campaigned vigorously for BJP candidates Kishore Nath, contesting from Borkhola, and Rajdeep Roy, the candidate from Silchar. He emphasized the party's vision of "Samanyay," a concept centered on the integration of the Barak and Brahmaputra valleys, along with the hills and plains, as the foundational principle for holistic growth across Assam.

Sonowal sharply criticized the previous Congress-led administrations, accusing them of decades of neglect that left the region underdeveloped. He contrasted this with the current regime's focus on infrastructure, claiming it has redefined the economic landscape of Barak Valley.

Infrastructure Milestones Redefine Connectivity

"Before 2016, connectivity challenges were so severe that even a trip to Guwahati was a struggle for residents," Sonowal stated during his speeches. "Today, with the near completion of the East-West Corridor and the foundation stone laid for the Rs 23,000 crore Shillong–Silchar high-speed corridor, Barak Valley is emerging as a critical hub for both trade and tourism."

He detailed several key projects that underscore this transformation:

  • Development of a new Greenfield airport near the Doloo tea garden, aimed at boosting regional air connectivity.
  • Expansion of railway services with over 20 regular trains, including premium options like Vistadome and Rajdhani, enhancing passenger mobility.
  • Revival of the Barak River through upgraded terminals at Badarpur and Karimganj, facilitating increased trade with Bangladesh and extending economic links to Southeast Asia.

Comprehensive Urban and Healthcare Upgrades

Beyond transportation, Sonowal highlighted over 600 development projects implemented in Silchar alone over recent years. Notable initiatives include the establishment of a solid waste treatment plant to improve urban sanitation and a 500-bed emergency unit at Silchar Medical College, significantly upgrading healthcare infrastructure in the region.

These efforts, according to Sonowal, collectively position Barak Valley as a pivotal economic and logistical center, moving beyond its historical isolation to play a key role in regional trade networks.
