Surat Civic Polls: Limbayat-Udhna Yard Ward 25 Leads with 26 Candidates

In the upcoming Surat Municipal Corporation election, Ward 25, known as Limbayat-Udhna Yard, has emerged as the most contested electoral ward in the city, with a staggering 26 candidates vying for the position. This makes it the most crowded ward, underscoring the fierce political competition in Surat, particularly in the southern and eastern zones.

High-Contest Wards Reflect Intense Political Rivalry

Following closely, Ward 18, which covers Limbayat, Parvat, and Kumbhariya, and Ward 30, comprising Kansad, Sachin, Unn, and Abhva, are jointly in second place with 24 candidates each. The high number of contestants in these wards highlights the intense political rivalry and strategic maneuvering among parties and independents.

Other wards with significant candidate numbers include:

  • Wards 12, 13, and 20: Each have 21 contestants.
  • Ward 24: Has 20 candidates.
  • Ward 14: Features 19 candidates.
  • Wards 8 and 19: Registered 17 candidates each.
  • Wards 3 and 11: Have 16 candidates each.

Migrant and Minority Areas Drive Candidate Surge

It is noteworthy that most wards with high candidate counts are areas with large populations of migrant workers engaged in labor-intensive jobs. These regions also have higher minority populations compared to other parts of Surat. Aslam Cyclewala, the Congress candidate from Ward 19, explained, "The number of candidates is high in wards where minority candidates from leading political parties are contesting. To divide minority votes, independents or candidates from not-so-popular political parties file nominations." This strategy aims to fragment the vote share, making these wards critical battlegrounds.

Lower-End Wards Show Minimal Competition

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Ward 21 has the fewest candidates with only 10, followed by Ward 9 with 11 candidates. Several other wards, including 4, 10, 16, and 22, have 12 candidates each, indicating relatively less political activity in these areas.

Campaigning Intensifies as Race Narrows

With the candidate picture now clear, political parties have ramped up their campaigning efforts across Surat. In some wards, the electoral equations have shifted following the withdrawal of nominations by key candidates, adding further complexity to the race. This dynamic environment underscores the high stakes involved in the municipal corporation elections, with parties striving to secure votes in densely contested regions.
