Kolkata: Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday declared that delivering justice for the families of 321 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers killed in political violence is the top priority of his government. Addressing reporters at Nabanna after his maiden cabinet meeting, Adhikari said, "We remember with deep respect the ultimate sacrifice of those 321 party workers, through whose martyrdom this government is established." He further added that the administration has taken responsibility for the "social and welfare needs" of the bereaved families.
Memorial for Martyrs
The BJP erected a temporary memorial beside the oath-taking stage for the council of ministers, displaying the names and districts of the "martyrs" allegedly killed after the 2021 assembly elections. This memorial served as a poignant reminder of the violence that has marred the state's political landscape.
Tributes from Top Leaders
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute to the fallen cadres. PM Modi shared images of the memorial on X, stating that the "courageous Karyakartas" would remain etched in the party's journey. Shah remarked that the struggle of those "noble souls" had finally found fulfilment with the formation of the new government.
State BJP president and MP Samik Bhattacharya claimed that more than 300 workers were killed by "TMC goons," highlighting the ongoing political tensions in West Bengal. The new administration has vowed to address these issues and ensure accountability.
