Rajinder Tahli was elected as the chairman of the Jalandhar Zila Parishad on Thursday, while Paramjit Saini became the vice-chairman. The elections were held under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner, who is also the CEO of the Zila Parishad.
Election Process and Results
The voting took place in the presence of 28 members of the Zila Parishad. Tahli secured 15 votes, while his rival candidate, Gurpreet Singh, received 13 votes. For the post of vice-chairman, Saini got 16 votes against 12 votes for his opponent, Manjit Kaur.
Cross-Voting and Political Implications
The election witnessed cross-voting from the ruling alliance, which includes the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). This development has raised eyebrows within the political circles of Jalandhar. The results are seen as a setback for the ruling coalition, as some of its members voted in favor of the opposition candidates.
Speaking after the election, Tahli thanked the members who supported him and promised to work for the development of the district. He emphasized the need for unity and cooperation among all members for the welfare of the people. Saini also expressed gratitude and assured that he would fulfill his responsibilities diligently.
Reactions from Political Parties
The opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), hailed the results as a victory for democracy. They accused the ruling alliance of internal conflicts and mismanagement. Meanwhile, the ruling coalition leaders downplayed the cross-voting, terming it as a routine affair in local body elections.
The election of Tahli and Saini is expected to have an impact on the upcoming municipal elections in the district. Political analysts believe that the outcome reflects the growing discontent within the ruling alliance. The new leadership of the Zila Parishad will now focus on key issues such as infrastructure development, sanitation, and education in rural areas.
