Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections Face Voter Boycott Over Civic Neglect
With less than a month remaining for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, a significant protest has emerged in Chennai's Pallavaram area. Nearly 400 residents of the 13th ward have decided to boycott voting, expressing frustration over long-pending civic issues and unfulfilled promises by authorities.
Polluted Pond Symbolizes Broader Neglect
At the heart of their grievances is the Ramasamy Chetty pond, a two-acre waterbody that was once a vital source of water for the community. Residents report that the pond is now severely polluted, filled with sewage and regularly used for dumping meat waste. Despite a high court order and a subsequent contempt notice, the local corporation has failed to take any steps toward restoration.
S P Gandhi, president of the Pallavaram Residents' Welfare Association, highlighted the issue of encroachments, stating, "There are hundreds of visible encroachments on the bunds; however, despite knowing that part belongs to the pond, many have received patta for it."
Basic Amenities Remain Elusive
The problems extend beyond the pond. Even five years after the Tambaram municipality was upgraded to a corporation, several basic facilities are still unavailable. Residents receive water supply only once every two or three days, and a sewage treatment plant has not been commissioned yet. Poor garbage collection exacerbates the situation, with waste not being cleared regularly on many streets.
Gandhi added, "There is no point in voting for any party when our fundamental needs are ignored."
Safety Concerns and Inaction
Further compounding their woes, residents have noted a rise in stray dog attacks and freely roaming cattle on main roads, posing significant risks to pedestrians and motorists. Repeated complaints to civic authorities and government officials have yielded no action, leaving the community feeling abandoned.
This boycott underscores a broader sentiment of disillusionment among voters, who are demanding tangible improvements in infrastructure and governance before participating in the electoral process.
