VCK Chief Thol Thirumavalavan Makes Strategic Shift to State Assembly from Kattumannarkoil

In a significant political move, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan has decided to transition from national to state politics by contesting the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from the Kattumannarkoil constituency in Cuddalore district. This rural agrarian segment, situated at the tail end of the Cauvery basin, was a natural choice as it falls within the Chidambaram Lok Sabha constituency that elected him to Parliament three times—in 2009, 2019, and 2024.

Strong Electoral Foundation and Alliance Support

VCK functionaries assert that Kattumannarkoil represents the best opportunity for Thirumavalavan. "In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Thiruma secured 50,000 more votes than AIADMK's M Chandrahasan in this area," noted a party official. This surge is widely attributed to the combined strength of the DMK-VCK alliance and Thirumavalavan's deep grassroots connections.

The party is also leveraging recent initiatives by the DMK government, such as:

Key Opponent and Historical Context

Thirumavalavan will face Dr Anbu Cholan, who has been fielded by Anbumani Ramadoss's PMK. The two previously contested against each other in the 2016 Assembly polls, where both were defeated by AIADMK candidate N Murugumaran. VCK members attribute this loss to Thirumavalavan's participation in the Makkal Nala Kootani, a third front at the time. However, the political landscape has shifted, with all parties from that former front, except the Tamil Maanila Congress, now aligned with the DMK coalition.

Demographic Advantages and Voter Dynamics

VCK is confident that Dalits, who constitute over 35% of the electorate, will overwhelmingly support Thirumavalavan. Additionally, approximately 35,000 Muslim voters are expected to favor the DMK front. "Muslims are the deciding factor in our constituency," emphasized Abdul Rahman, a tour operator from Lalpet.

Despite a sizeable Vanniyar population in the constituency, the ongoing rift between senior and junior Ramadoss is anticipated to split the community's votes. Furthermore, DMK heavyweight M R K Panneerselvam, a Vanniyar leader from Kattumannarkoil, could influence votes toward VCK.

Challenges for the Opposition and Internal Discontent

While PMK's Anbu Cholan is regarded as a competent candidate, political observers highlight the uphill battle he faces. Even AIADMK functionaries express apprehension, with one stating, "Thirumavalavan is a popular leader, and it's a tough challenge."

Within AIADMK ranks, discontent simmers as the party high command ceded the seat to PMK, overlooking ticket aspirant N Murugamaran. "If Murugamaran had been fielded here, he would have given a fight to the VCK leader," remarked another party member.

Broader Political Implications

Beyond Thirumavalavan's electoral prospects, his decision to resign as a Lok Sabha MP and contest the Assembly election has sparked speculation. Although he has stated a desire to focus more on state politics, analysts interpret this move as a potential indicator of an impending shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape post-elections.
