Tamil Nadu Political Parties Capitalize on Vijay-Ajith Fan Rivalry to Attract Youth

In a strategic move to capture the attention of young voters, political parties in Tamil Nadu have actively entered the longstanding fan rivalry between actors Vijay and Ajith Kumar. This initiative is seen as a calculated effort to pull first-time and youthful voters to their respective sides, particularly in key constituencies like Coimbatore.

AIADMK's Outreach to Ajith Fans

Recently, former minister and senior AIADMK leader S P Velumani conducted an interactive session with a group of Ajith fans in Selvapuram, located within the Thondamuthur constituency. During the meeting, Velumani emphasized the mutual respect between Ajith and the late AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa, popularly known as 'Amma'.

"It is well known that Ajith had immense respect for our leader 'Amma'. In the spirit of that mutual admiration, we urge his fans to recognise the visionary work done during her tenure and cast their votes for AIADMK," Velumani stated. This outreach is viewed as a deliberate attempt to tap into Ajith's highly organized fan base, which wields significant influence over young and first-time voters in the region.

Consolidating Opposition Votes Against New Entrants

Addressing the evolving political landscape and the emergence of new players such as Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Velumani issued clear instructions to party cadres. He stressed the importance of ensuring that opposition votes remain unified and not fragmented.

"Not a single vote should be diverted to the TVK. Every anti-DMK vote and the crucial minority votes must be consolidated under the AIADMK banner to ensure a decisive victory," he told workers. To achieve this, Velumani directed party members to initiate conversations within their own families, educating younger generations about the welfare schemes and infrastructure projects implemented during the AIADMK regime.

Bridging Generational Gaps and Countering Rivals

The AIADMK's strategy aims to bridge the generational gap, reclaim its stronghold in Coimbatore, and neutralize the influence of its primary rival, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). By engaging with fan clubs, the party hopes to resonate with youth who are often disengaged from traditional politics.

Other Parties Join the Fray

AIADMK is not alone in this endeavor. Other political entities have also made efforts to attract Ajith fans. For instance, some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders frequently greet Ajith during his car racing events and congratulated him on receiving the Padma award. Similarly, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has publicly supported Ajith's sporting ventures, showcasing cross-party interest in leveraging celebrity influence.

TVK's Counter-Strategies

On the other side, TVK cadres are well aware of these efforts and have been actively countering them. In several TVK meetings, banners have appeared with slogans like 'Thala rasigan, Thalapathy thondan' (Fan of Ajith, follower of Vijay), highlighting the interconnected fan dynamics. Vijay himself has referenced his association with Ajith at rallies, such as signing a photograph with Ajith at an event in Namakkal in September 2025, which was widely shared on social media by TVK supporters.

This political maneuvering underscores the growing trend of parties in Tamil Nadu using popular culture and fan loyalties as tools to sway electoral outcomes, particularly among the youth demographic.
