Tamil Nadu's Economic Growth Amid Inflation Debate in Assembly
In a significant development highlighting the state's economic trajectory, Tamil Nadu's per capita income has shown a remarkable increase, rising from ₹2.06 lakh in 2021 to ₹3.15 lakh in the fiscal year 2025-26. This announcement was made by State Public Works Minister E V Velu during a spirited debate on inflation in the legislative assembly on Friday.
Opposition Raises Concerns Over Inflation
Initiating the debate, Deputy Leader of the Opposition R B Udhayakumar pointed out that the customary address of the governor in the assembly made no mention of inflation, a pressing issue affecting citizens. Udhayakumar drew a sharp comparison between the prices of essential commodities under the current DMK government and the previous AIADMK administration, asserting that costs have surged by nearly 100%.
Government's Defense and Historical Context
In response, Minister E V Velu provided a broader perspective by comparing the price of gold over decades. He noted that in 1967, one sovereign of gold cost ₹100, questioning whether such a price could be expected today. Velu emphasized that inflation becomes a problem only when individual per capita income does not keep pace with rising prices.
"But in Tamil Nadu, the per capita income grew from ₹1.56 lakh in 2012 to ₹2.06 lakh in 2021, and now to ₹3.15 lakh in 2025-26," Velu stated, underscoring the state's economic resilience. He added that inflation has been a persistent issue, even during the tenure of the late Chief Minister K Kamaraj, suggesting it is not a new phenomenon.
Transport Minister's Remarks on AIADMK Era
Supporting this view, Transport Minister S S Sivasankar remarked that during the ten years of AIADMK rule, the word 'inflation' was also absent from the governor's address, implying that the current government is not uniquely responsible for economic challenges.
Debate Extends to Laptop Distribution Scheme
The discussion took another turn when Udhayakumar questioned the timing of the government's laptop distribution initiative for final-year college students, suggesting it was being implemented towards the end of the government's term. Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu clarified the policy, explaining that initially, laptops will be provided to final-year students. Subsequently, the scheme will be extended to pre-final-year students, and eventually to first-year students, ensuring a phased and comprehensive rollout.
This assembly session highlighted not only the contentious issue of inflation but also showcased the government's efforts to balance economic growth with social welfare programs, as Tamil Nadu continues to navigate its developmental path.
