Trichy Waste Collection Truck Catches Fire, Completely Destroyed
A waste collection truck operated by the Trichy corporation was completely charred after catching fire near Srirangam on Monday. The incident occurred on the Thiruvanaikoil bridge, disrupting traffic temporarily.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Blaze
According to official sources, two contract workers had been collecting waste in a mini tipper dump truck from ward 21. They were traveling from Marakkadai towards the micro compost yard at Ambedkar Nagar near Srirangam. While passing over the Thiruvanaikoil bridge around 12:15 PM, the tipper bed suddenly caught fire.
Commuters following behind the truck immediately noticed the flames and alerted the driver, Sivakumar, and collection worker Rengarajan. Both individuals promptly stopped the vehicle and evacuated to a safe distance. The fire rapidly spread, engulfing the entire truck within moments.
Fire and Rescue Response
Six fire and rescue services personnel, led by Srirangam station officer L Sahayaraj, arrived at the scene around 12:30 PM. They worked diligently to control the blaze, successfully dousing the flames by approximately 1:15 PM. However, the truck was already completely charred and beyond salvage.
Police officials subsequently removed the remains of the vehicle from the bridge, allowing vehicular traffic to resume normal flow. The quick response prevented any injuries, though the material loss was significant.
Investigation into the Cause
A fire official indicated that the cause of the fire could likely be attributed to a fuel leak combined with friction. This combination is known to generate excessive heat, potentially igniting flammable materials. Further investigations may be conducted to confirm the exact technical failure.
This incident highlights the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, especially for municipal service trucks that operate continuously in urban areas. The Trichy corporation may review its fleet safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
