Post-Election Turmoil in Tripura Displaces Over 1,000 BJP Supporters

In the aftermath of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections, a wave of violence has reportedly forced more than 1,000 BJP leaders and supporters to abandon their homes in parts of Khowai and West Tripura districts. Since Friday evening, many have sought refuge in safer locations as unrest linked to the election results escalates.

Alleged Attacks by TIPRA Motha Activists

The turmoil is attributed to alleged attacks by activists of TIPRA Motha, who are celebrating the party's decisive victory of 24 out of 28 ADC seats. In eastern Agartala, approximately 300 tribals from the Jirania and Mandai areas have taken shelter at the Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel. Additionally, around 200 more individuals have found refuge in the BJP's Khowai office.

Residents have made serious allegations, claiming that Motha supporters have carried out coordinated assaults on homes, looted personal belongings and livestock, destroyed rubber plantations, and set fire to shops and houses. In Asharambari, located in Khowai, several people were allegedly assaulted and pressured to cease their support for the BJP.

Ministerial Visits and Police Appeals

On Saturday, social welfare minister Tinku Roy, tourism minister Sushanta Chowdhury, and BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee visited the affected areas in Khowai and Jirania. They met with families who reported extensive damage to property and ongoing threats to their safety.

The BJP leaders also held meetings with local police officials, urging them to ensure the protection of residents and take decisive action against those responsible for the violence. Despite these appeals, concerns over police inaction persist among the displaced communities.

BJP Candidates Fear Returning Home

Several BJP candidates who lost in the ADC elections are reportedly reluctant to return to their constituencies due to continuing threats. This group includes general secretary Bipin Debbarma, secretary Devid Debbarma, former council executive member Bhumika Nanda Reang, and Sanjib Reang.

Devid Debbarma, a BJP candidate from Ramchandraghat in Khowai and a state party secretary, has made specific allegations. He claims that his home and property were attacked by TIPRA Motha supporters "under the direction of MLA Ranjit Debbarma." According to Debbarma, his house was damaged, his rubber orchard destroyed, and livestock belonging to an associate was taken.

Describing the precarious situation, Debbarma stated that his family stayed awake at night, fearing renewed attacks, and avoided stepping out even for essential needs. He further accused the police of inaction, alleging that law enforcement did not intervene even when BJP workers were attacked in their presence.

Widespread Violence and Lack of Action

Complaints have been filed over multiple incidents allegedly involving TIPRA Motha supporters since April 11, the day before polling. However, residents report that no follow-up action has been taken, exacerbating fear and uncertainty in the region.

Reports of post-election violence have emerged from numerous locations, including Khowai, Bishramganj, Teliamura, Jirania, Sabroom, and nearby areas. Allegations include assaults, arson, and vandalism specifically targeting BJP offices and supporters. In South Tripura, it was alleged that Motha supporters shut down two local markets in Manubankul, where a BJP candidate had won.

TIPRA Motha's Response

In response to the allegations, TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman issued a statement, saying, "TIPRA Motha doesn't endorse any violence and whoever is indulging in such acts are not warriors for the development of tribals." This denial comes amidst mounting accusations and a tense atmosphere in the state.

The situation remains fluid, with displaced individuals continuing to seek safety as authorities grapple with restoring order and addressing the grievances of those affected by the violence.
