TVK Election Merchandise Sales Skyrocket Across Tamil Nadu
As election season heats up in Tamil Nadu, shops specializing in political merchandise are witnessing a remarkable surge in sales, with actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) dominating the market. From traditional flags to innovative 3D-printed items, TVK-themed products are flying off shelves, outpacing established parties like AIADMK and DMK.
Madurai Shops Report Unprecedented Demand
In Madurai city, particularly on East Avani Moola Street, vendors have been bustling with activity. Kumar T, a shop owner with 26 years of experience who has witnessed four elections, noted that sales of TVK-related merchandise began weeks before the official election date announcement. "We sell party flags of various sizes and types, including cloth and paper versions. Festoon flags are especially popular for party events and conferences," he explained.
Kumar highlighted that metal chest badges engraved with party symbols and flags are among the latest arrivals. Additionally, products such as ID tags imprinted with the party name and colored to match the TVK flag are in high demand. He observed a significant shift in market dynamics, stating that while AIADMK and DMK merchandise typically records good sales, demand for MNM products has dropped considerably and is now limited mostly to party functions. Sales of BJP flags and festoons have also declined, though they saw a boost during K Annamalai's tenure as state president.
Children and Customized Items Drive Sales
Another shopkeeper, Manikandan S, shared anecdotes of children pressuring their parents to purchase TVK merchandise. He recalled an incident where a man stopped his car to buy large quantities of TVK items. "This year, we introduced a customized whistle featuring the colors of the TVK flag, and its sales have been skyrocketing," Manikandan said. In contrast, symbols of other parties like the Lotus, Rising Sun, and Two Leaves are primarily sold as handheld plastic placards.
3D Printing Fuels Innovation in Tirupur
The trend extends beyond Madurai to industrial hubs like Tirupur, where small-scale 3D printers have revolutionized the election merchandise business. Creating TVK-themed articles, including whistles, and selling them online has become a lucrative venture, with operations spreading to districts including Chennai.
Vinoth Kumar of Tirupur, who recently designed a customized whistle with embossed 'TVK' letters and party flag colors, shared his experience. "Generally, I do customized 3D printing products as single pieces. This is the first time I opted for a bulk order on a single design," he said. After posting a video of the whistle sample, he received 400-450 bulk order enquiries daily for five consecutive days, with half converting into actual orders shipped to cities like Bangalore.
Export Opportunities and Broader Impact
In Salem district, clothing and silk sarees exclusively designed with the TVK flag theme have even been exported to countries such as the United Kingdom and Malaysia, highlighting the party's growing influence. This election cycle, TVK's merchandise is not just a local phenomenon but a significant economic driver, showcasing how political branding can spur innovation and commerce in regions across Tamil Nadu.
