Udhayanidhi Stalin slams TVK over crop loan waiver scam

CHENNAI: Former deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin launched a scathing attack on the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, accusing chief minister C Joseph Vijay-led administration of cheating farmers by diluting its electoral promise of a complete crop loan waiver.

Allegations of deception

“Now, they are carrying out a scam in the name of crop loan waiver. Should people mentally prepare themselves for more such deceptions from the CM?” Udhayanidhi Stalin said on Monday. In a post on social media platform X, the DMK youth wing secretary highlighted that TVK, during the election campaign, had promised a complete waiver of crop loans for farmers owning up to five acres of land. However, the government has now announced full waiver only for loans up to Rs 50,000, which he termed an “injustice to farmers and a massive breach of trust.”

Pattern of broken promises

Udhayanidhi further recalled that the ruling party had similarly backtracked on its promise of free electricity. He pointed out that TVK had promised 200 units of free power but later imposed conditions, excluding consumers using more than 500 units. According to him, the latest announcement on crop loan waiver reflects a continuing pattern in the implementation of the ruling party’s electoral assurances.

The former deputy CM’s remarks come amid growing discontent among farmers who expected full relief from their loan burdens. The DMK has been critical of the TVK government’s policies, accusing it of failing to uphold its commitments to the agricultural community.
