UP Congress Chief Urges Yogi for 48-Hour Crop Damage Survey After Unseasonal Rains
UP Congress Demands 48-Hour Crop Damage Survey After Hailstorms

In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai has urgently called upon Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to address the severe agricultural crisis triggered by recent unseasonal rains and hailstorms. On Monday, Rai formally requested the state government to launch a comprehensive, time-bound survey within the next 48 hours to evaluate the extensive crop and human losses, while also advocating for immediate interim relief measures for the affected farmers.

Demands for Enhanced Compensation and Accountability

In a detailed letter addressed to the Chief Minister, Rai outlined several critical demands. He pressed for significantly increased compensation packages for the widespread crop damage, alongside a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the families of individuals who lost their lives due to lightning strikes during the storms. Furthermore, Rai emphasized the need for strict accountability regarding any delays in the distribution of relief funds, highlighting systemic inefficiencies that have exacerbated the farmers' plight.

Widespread Devastation Across Agricultural Regions

Rai provided a grim assessment of the situation, noting that the unseasonal spell of rain and hailstorm over the past two weeks has resulted in largescale destruction of crops. Farmers from various regions across Uttar Pradesh have reported catastrophic losses, with standing crops such as wheat, mustard, pulses, vegetables, and fruits suffering severe damage. Initial estimates indicate that crop losses range from 10% to as high as 70% in multiple districts, with some areas experiencing complete devastation of their agricultural yields.

Broader Impact on Rural Life and Economy

The Congress leader also highlighted additional repercussions beyond crop damage. Incidents of fatalities and serious injuries caused by lightning strikes have been reported, compounding the human toll of the natural disaster. Moreover, disruptions in power supply and transport services have further strained rural communities, indicating a broader negative impact on local economies and daily life in affected areas.

Allegations Against Insurance Companies

In his letter, Rai accused insurance companies of systematically evading their responsibilities under the crop insurance scheme. He claimed that these firms are rejecting legitimate claims from farmers on technical grounds, thereby denying them much-needed financial support during this critical time. This allegation underscores the challenges farmers face in accessing promised relief mechanisms, adding to their financial distress.

The appeal from the state Congress president underscores the urgent need for governmental intervention to mitigate the suffering of farmers and stabilize the agricultural sector in Uttar Pradesh following these unexpected weather events.
