Uttar Pradesh Launches Initiative to Empower Women in Sugarcane Sector
In a significant move to bolster women's participation in agriculture, the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Gramin Aajivika Mission (UPSRLM) has forged a strategic partnership with the state's sugarcane department. This collaboration, announced on Sunday, aims to empower women by increasing their involvement in sugarcane production and related value-added activities.
Connecting Women's Self-Help Groups with Livelihood Opportunities
The agreement is specifically designed to link women's self-help groups with sugarcane-based livelihoods, thereby enhancing their income and fostering self-reliance. Currently, Uttar Pradesh boasts approximately 47.5 lakh sugarcane farmers, with around 2.9 lakh being women. Among these, over 57,000 women are already actively engaged in preparing improved sugarcane seedlings, organized into 3,000 self-help groups. These groups play a crucial role in disseminating new sugarcane varieties across the state.
Expanding Roles Beyond Seedling Production
Officials have outlined that this initiative will expand women's roles beyond mere seedling production. The program will include comprehensive training and support for various value-added activities, such as processing, organic product manufacturing, and jaggery production. This expansion is expected to not only strengthen the rural economy but also create new employment opportunities for women in the agricultural sector.
A government spokesperson emphasized, "This partnership will not only strengthen the rural economy but also generate new employment opportunities for women, ensuring their active participation in the state's agricultural growth."
The initiative underscores Uttar Pradesh's commitment to gender inclusivity in agriculture, leveraging the sugarcane sector as a key driver for women's economic empowerment. By integrating women into higher-value segments of the sugarcane supply chain, the state aims to enhance productivity and sustainability in its agricultural landscape.
